The results for the 2021 Steam Awards are in and Resident Evil Village won Game of the Year, as voted by members of the Steam community. Resident Evil Village was one of the most popular FPS of 2021, with fans clamoring to play the game ahead of launch, thanks in no small part to the widespread popularity of a certain Lady Dimitrescu.

This past Q1, Capcom had its biggest earnings period ever in 2021, thanks to the double hit of Monster Hunter Rise and Resident Evil Village. The game has sold over five million copies to date, and will likely sell more, once the planned DLC has been revealed in further detail. The critical reception to the game was positive, with many describing it as combining the best elements of the first-person horror of Resident Evil 7 with the setting and the more action-oriented tone of Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil Village won the PS4 Game of the Year award at the PlayStation Blog, it won four Golden Joystick awards (including Ultimate Game of the Year and PlayStation Game of the Year). Additionally, Maggie Robertson (who did the motion capture and provided the voice for Lady Dimitrescu) won the Best Performance award at the 2021 Game Awards. Now, Resident Evil Village can add another trophy to its shelf, seeing as it was awarded the Game of the Year Award in the 2021 Steam Awards. The win was revealed on the official Steam Twitter page.

The winners of the other categories include Cooking Simulator VR snagging VR Game of the Year, Terraria winning Labor of Love, It Takes Two winning Better with Friends, Forza Horizon 5 winning Outstanding Visual Style, Deathloop winning Most Innovative Gameplay, Nioh 2 - The Complete Edition winning Best Game You Suck At, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy winning Best Soundtrack, and Farming Simulator 22 winning the Sit Back and Relax category. Despite its incredibly rocky start, Cybperunk 2077 also won the Outstanding Story-Rich Game award. This shouldn't be too surprising, considering Cyberpunk 2077 was one of Steam's biggest games in 2021 - in terms of both sales and playtime.

The Steam Awards is voted on by members of the Steam community and it's always a good sign that there are no repeat winners across the board. This goes to show what an amazing mixture of games was released in 2020 and 2021, and that many of them resonated with a lot of people - rather than one single title dominating the discourse. Resident Evil Village might have earned memetic status throughout the year, but that didn't take away from the fact that it's a great game, and many people enjoyed it across multiple platforms.
