Capcom unveiled a new Resident Evil Village trailer at the PlayStation 5 showcase that brought with it a slew of new details about the upcoming horror title's story and environment, which both look like major improvements on the game's standard formula over the past several iterations. Resident Evil Village is the latest instalment in one of the most iconic horror franchises in gaming history, and follows a couple remakes in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 that were so well done they rekindled fan interest in the series significantly.

That isn't a knock against Resident Evil 7, which did well in its own right - it's more the fact that Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 were two of the best entries in the series already, and fans were ecstatic to see them not just remastered but remade into great modern games on their own. The Resident Evil series as a whole has looked healthier than it has in years, and that's partly thanks to the fact that the same can be said about Capcom, too - which is riding successes with that franchise on top of Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry.

The new Resident Evil Village trailer at the PlayStation 5 showcase demonstrated that, if nothing else, the next entry in the series is going to look absolutely incredible. Though the same could be said about most games revealed at the showcase, it's especially true of Resident Evil Village, which showed off the usual grim aesthetic and monster hordes that terrify fans, but also flexed its creative muscles with a distinct spin on a fairy tale vibe. There's a lot to like about the trailer, although it doesn't answer a lot of key questions still: who the main enemies are, for instance, or the motivation and history behind the village proper.

Resident Evil Village again demonstrated why the series is so good at captivating its fans, however. The trailer caught a great in-between vibe for both eerieness and outright horror, and the snow-driven village aesthetic is a tried-and-true classic that works well. The game had very strong resemblances to Resident Evil 4 as well, which, beyond the obvious village comparisons, could mean there are some potential tie-ins in store for those two titles.

Regardless of what ultimately happens, Resident Evil Village looks like it is still attempting to push the series forward. Before fans see gameplay, it's tough to make a call, but there's a lot to be optimistic for in advance of some lengthy looks at what Capcom's gameplay design on Resident Evil Village finally looks like.
