The star of Capcom's marketing for Resident Evil Village is undoubtedly Lady Dimitrescu, the tall vampire - or vampire-like - antagonist for the player's character, Ethan Winters. But in some of the horror game's most recent footage, Dimitrescu mentions a previously unknown person called Mother Miranda. This mysterious figure could potentially be instrumental to the plot, yet there are only a few things that can realistically be surmised from clues.

The known story of RE8 revolves around Ethan Winters, who ends up in a mysterious village - presumably located somewhere in Romania or Hungary, based on Dimitrescu's supposed origins. Thanks in part to the Maiden demo for Resident Evil Village, PS5 players have had a chance to get up close to Village's tall lady already.

A key scene in recent Resident Evil Village videos involves Lady Dimitrescu sitting down for a phone call. It's her responses to the unheard caller that identify Miranda for the first time, and notably, Dimitrescu always uses the honorific Mother Miranda - implying she holds some sort of higher rank. In Catholicism, Mother Superior is one of the terms used to refer to the female head of a religious order, such as an abbey. That could apply literally to Miranda, but given the context, she's most likely someone who's ranked higher than Lady Dimitrescu in either a cult or some sinister organization.

What's Known Of Mother Miranda In RE8 So Far

In the recent gameplay trailer, Dimitrescu mentions that Winters has "escaped that fool Heisenberg," and promises that Heisenberg - another mysterious character - will pay. But more importantly, Miranda reminds Dimitrescu that Winters is vital to "the ceremony," since it can't be completed without him. Though what that ceremony might entail is unknown, this does support the idea of Miranda heading some sort of cultist religious group. Dimitrescu isn't fully loyal, in any event - she throws a violent tantrum once the call is over, more concerned about taking vengeance. Presumably the player will face and kill both characters before Resident Evil Village is over, unless Capcom is aiming to stretch the plot across multiple games or have one character murder the other.

Mother Miranda may or may not be central to the story. If she is, players are unlikely to learn more about her until Resident Evil Village launches on May 7. The cryptic references in Capcom marketing suggest a much more elaborate plot, which would be par for the course for the series. It's even possible that she's the masked figure in a recent Resident Evil Japanese ad, although this hasn't been officially confirmed.

UPDATE 4/10/21: More information has been revealed about Mother Miranda since the writing of this article that - among other details - confirm she is indeed the masked figure in the ad. To learn more, check out Screen Rant's news update here.
