Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Resident Evil Village topped the UK sales charts in May, while the rest of the top ten list featured games that have historically appeared there quite frequently. May had some big releases, but few games could hope to keep up with the new Resident Evil or the triumphant return of the original Mass Effect titles.
The video game sales discourse in 2021 has been focused on consoles, as the Nintendo Switch tries to hold its place against the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. To date, the PS5 is outselling the Switch in the UK, with the Xbox Series X/S in third place. The focus has shifted away from games, due to how sparse the release schedule is for the second half of 2021, though E3 2021 should hopefully have announcements that will help fill out the rest of the year.
The UK sales figures for May 2021 are in. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Resident Evil Village was the best-selling game of the month, with Mass Effect: Legendary Edition in second place. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition did manage to push Resident Evil Village to the second-place spot when it launched, but it didn't win out for the month. Resident Evil Village sold nearly double the copies of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, with 43% of its sales being on PS5 and 31% on Xbox. The PS5 itself was the best-selling console of the month, while the Nintendo Switch dropped to third place, likely due to the lack of any big releases.
The rest of the list is dominated by the usual games. FIFA 21 is #3, Grand Theft Auto V is #4, and NBA 2K21 is #5. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is #6, as it saw a surge in sales following a PS5 restock in the UK. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is #7, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is #8, Red Dead Redemption 2 is #9, and New Pokémon Snap is #10.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and Resident Evil Village were highly-acclaimed games that belonged to big franchises, so it's no surprise that they were able to uproot the regular entries in the sales chart. It's doubtful that they will retain their positions, as June has some big titles of its own, including FF7 Remake Intergrade, Scarlet Nexus, Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, and Mario Golf: Super Rush, all of which have the potential to be a hit in the UK. E3 2021 is also around the corner, and who knows what games could be shadow-dropped during the event?
