Capcom's Resident Evil Village is a direct continuation of Resident Evil 7, set roughly three years after the previous game. Ethan and Mia Winters have moved to Europe to start a new life, but that's thrown into disarray when Chris Redfield suddenly appears and murders Mia.

The events of Resident Evil Village shed more light on this event and Chris's motivations, but much of the overarching story isn't revealed until the last hour or so. It's important to keep what happened in Resident Evil 7 in mind, as the story from the previous games directly tie into the story of Resident Evil Village.
There's a lot of info thrown at players in the final stretch of Resident Evil Village, and it can be hard to keep everything straight. It should be noted again that there are massive spoilers ahead for Resident Evil Village's ending, and the game's epilogue.
Resident Evil Village's Mind-Bending Ending
The ending to Resident Evil Village really starts as soon as Ethan defeats Heisenberg outside of the factory. After destroying the mechanical monstrosity, Ethan is confronted by Mother Miranda impersonating his wife, Mia. Here she reveals she was impersonating Mia at the beginning of the game when Chris broke into the Winters' house and seemingly killed Mia. All of this was to kidnap Ethan's daughter Rose because she's apparently Eveline's "true complete form" and some kind of vessel. Mother Miranda plans on using the Megamycete, a strange being housed beneath the village, and Rose, to reincarnate her daughter Eveline.
In a shocking twist Miranda seemingly kills Ethan and players switch to the perspective of Chris Redfield as he infiltrates the village in search of Miranda. Chris sharply feels regret for the death of Ethan, and he originally kidnapped Ethan worried that Miranda may have infected him. At the same time Chris is infiltrating the village, the BSAA arrives and starts battling Miranda's forces. While battling through enemies, Chris's squad learns that the mold from RE7 and Eveline both first originated from the village. Eventually, he stumbles upon the Megamycete, which he plants a bomb on, and then Miranda's lab where he saves the real Mia Winters.
A bit of Resident Evil Village's history can be learned in the lab through documents, revealing that Eveline died from a Spanish Influenza outbreak one hundred years ago. Filled with despair, Miranda wandered into a cave for her final moments but discovered the Megamycete, which apparently can absorb the consciousness of anyone buried in the village. Miranda spends decades experimenting on people, trying to find the perfect vessel to bring Eveline back, and through these experiments gave a sample of both the mold and Eveline's DNA to The Connections, which is how she ended up in Louisiana in Resident Evil 7.
Mia hints that there's something unknown about Ethan, then things suddenly switch back to his perspective. Through some kind of vision featuring Eveline, it's revealed that Ethan was killed by Jack Baker in Resident Evil 7, and he's only lived on as an advanced type of Molded. This is why he's been able to take so much damage, and do things like re-attach his arm.
Ethan wakes from the vision aboard The Duke's carriage, still alive through sheer force of will. The Duke drops Ethan off at the ceremony site, where he goes to face Miranda. The Duke gives him one final warning, saying "Mr. Winters, I'm afraid you can't return to your old world any longer."
At the ceremony site, Miranda pulls Rose out of a pool of mold, and Miranda's power literally starts leaking out of her body. As Ethan confronts her, Miranda turns in a grotesque six-winged creature. After a furious battle, Ethan kills Miranda and saves Rose, but his body starts to crumble away. Chris helps evacuate Ethan and Rose, but on the way to the helicopter Ethan staggers and realizes he won't make it. He gives Rose to Chris and asks him to "Watch over her, teach her to be strong," then takes the bomb detonator from Chris.
As Chris, Mia, and Rose escape the area via helicopter Ethan presses the detonator and destroys the Megamycete. While in the air, Chris checks on a dead BSAA soldier and learns that it's not human, but a bioweapon that looks suspiciously like a Resident Evil Tyrant. With the truth revealed, Chris plots a course for BSAA Europe HQ. That's the main Resident Evil Village ending, but there's one final surprise after the credits roll.
Resident Evil's Future After RE Village
A teenage Rose visits the grave of Ethan Winters, sporting the jacket he gave her when he died. It's not exactly clear when the scene takes place, but based on Rose's age it would be roughly fifteen years after Resident Evil Village. As she pays her respects a BSAA agent appears to pick her up.
Rose has developed powers similar to Eveline's, and she seems to be fully knowledgeable of her birth and the events in both Louisiana in Resident Evil 7 and the village in Resident Evil Village. The BSAA agent mocks her by calling her Eveline and Rose flies into a rage, warning him she's capable of much more than Chris knows. The agent tells a hidden sniper to stand down and not take the shot, as "she's only a kid."
In Resident Evil Village's ending (and afterwards) it's obvious Chris has had a hand in raising Rose, and the game's epilogue seems to suggest she's now working for the BSAA fighting bioweapons. The unnamed agent tells Rose that she's a lot like her father, Ethan.
