The newest installment in the Resident Evil franchise has just hit the streaming platform, featuring brand new characters and familiar faces alike. Resident Evil is the second television adaptation and the ninth live-action adaptation to follow the original video game series. Though the Netflix series exists within an original universe, Resident Evil borrows canon lore, characters, and backstory from the video games, ranging from the first Resident Evil game in 1996 to 2021's Resident Evil Village.
Netflix's Resident Evil follows two timelines; one in 2022 and one in 2036. The 2022 timeline follows two 14-year-old twin sisters, Jade and Billie Wesker, as they move to New Raccoon City for their father's new position in the Umbrella Corporation. There, the sisters uncover far more than they ever expected about their father and the company that employs him. At the same time, the T-virus — a virus that causes people to mutate into flesh-eating zombies called Zeroes — has begun to run rampant in Mexico. Conversely, in the 2036 timeline, the world is struggling to survive as the T-virus has caused a global apocalypse, dwindling the human population down to 300 million - and outside of the walled settlements that hold what is left of humanity, six billion Zeroes roam the planet.
Netflix's Resident Evil adaptation was first announced in 2020 but faced serious delays during the COVID-19 pandemic before finally seeing a July 2022 release. Though the streaming platform has yet to confirm the series for a second season, showrunner Andrew Dabb has already expressed interest in running the show for as long as the audience allows, promising deeper lore and game elements as the series progresses (via TVLine). Ella Balinska As Jade Wesker
In 2036, Jade Wesker is one of the few remaining survivors of the zombie apocalypse that has plagued the planet. Having been raised by Albert Wesker, a researcher for the Umbrella Corporation, Jade's primary goal as a virologist in the apocalypse is to understand the beasts that now roam the planet in an attempt to overcome them, whether through control or a cure. Jade Wesker is a new element to the Resident Evil franchise, not having appeared in any previous installment. The series is mainly told through Jade's eyes as she attempts to overcome the apocalypse while avoiding capture by the Umbrella Corporation, which is desperately trying to locate her.
Jade Wesker is played by Ella Balinska, an English actress with a blossoming career. Balinska broke out with her role as Jane Kano in the 2019 adaptation of Charlie's Angels alongside Kristen Stewart and Naomi Scott. Since then, Balinska has appeared in the film Run Sweetheart Run and lent her voice to the upcoming action-adventure video game, Forsaken.
Siena Agudong As Billie Wesker
A product of mysterious IVF circumstances, Billie Wesker is Jade's 14-year-old twin sister and daughter of researcher Albert Wesker. Though Billie was close to her sister before they arrived at New Raccoon City in 2022, the sisters' bond is tested as Billie struggles to fit in at school and lashes out after becoming the victim of bullying. Billie serves as a major catalyst for Jade's metamorphosis into a zombie-killing machine after they attempt to expose the Umbrella Corporation for cruel animal testing results in Billie being infected with the T-virus, and her change in personality forces them to drift apart.
Billie Wesker is portrayed by Siena Agudong, a young actress who got her start back in 2013. Agudong has appeared in several children's shows and movies, including Nickelodeon's Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, Star Falls, the Disney Channel movie Upside-Down Magic, and Netflix's No Good Nick. Agudong has also made brief cameos in shows like Hawaii Five-0 and movies like F9: The Fast Saga, where she appeared as a young Mia Toretto.
Lance Reddick As Albert Wesker
Albert Wesker is a prolific researcher and executive for the Umbrella Corporation, an international company that has its hands in many baskets, including the sales of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. As the adopted father of Jade and Billie Wesker, Albert moved the girls to New Raccoon City after he was appointed an executive role after he developed a miracle pill nicknamed "Joy," which had promised to treat several mental health conditions despite horrifying side effects. However, the girls learn there may be much more to their father than they ever realized after breaking into the Umbrella HQ. Unlike his daughters — who are original characters created for Netflix's Resident Evil — Albert Wesker is a well-known character in the Resident Evil franchise, having previously appeared as a villain in several Resident Evil video games.
Lance Reddick is a prominent name in the world of acting. After his breakout role playing Cedric Daniels in The Wire, Reddick went on to take roles in iconic TV series like Lost, Fringe, and American Horror Story. Reddick has also appeared in films such as the John Wick franchise and White House Down. His voice can be found in various animated projects, podcasts, and video games, too, ranging from shows such as Castlevania to games like Horizon Zero Dawn.
Resident Evil Supporting Cast & Characters
- Paola Núñez as Evelyn Marcus - Evelyn Marcus recently inherited the role of CEO at the Umbrella Corporation after her father, Dr. James Marcus, passed away. Putting profits before all else, Marcus heavily backed an experimental drug — a so-called miracle drug named Joy — in 2022, despite Albert Wesker's protests. Núñez is known for her appearances in The Son and Bad Boys for Life.
- Connor Gosatti as Simon - Simon is the son of Evelyn Marcus and a fellow student at New Raccoon City's high school who becomes friends with Jade Wesker. Resident Evil is Gosatti's first major appearance on-screen.
- Turlough Convery as Richard Baxter - Richard Baxter is an Umbrella Corporation employee tasked with tracking down Jade Wesker at all costs. Convery has previously appeared in television series such as Killing Eve and films such as Ready Player One and Belfast.
- Tamara Smart as young Jade Wesker - In 2022, a young Jade Wesker moved from the United States to South Africa and is attending a new high school in New Raccoon City alongside her sister, Billie. Smart has previously appeared in films such as Disney+'s Artemis Fowl and A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting.
- Adeline Rudolph as adult Billie Wesker - Fourteen years after breaking into Umbrella HQ and becoming infected with the Resident Evil T-virus, Billie Wesker is now all grown-up. Rudolph is known for her appearances in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale.
- Ahad Raza Mir as Arjun Batra - Jade Wesker's husband who plays the role of her emotional support in Resident Evil's 2036 timeline. Ahad Raza Mir is a popular South Asian actor known for his roles in Hindi/Urdu television and films.
