Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Resident Evil.

As he brings a new take to the property, showrunner Andrew Dabb reveals that a potential Resident Evil season 2 will feature even more video game elements. The Netflix series marks the second TV adaptation of Capcom's video game franchise after the anime series Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, which premiered on the streaming platform in mid-2021 to mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. It also marks the latest live-action adaptation of the games following Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich's six-film franchise and the recent reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Much like last year's movie reboot, Resident Evil is set within the timeline of the video games, though creates a new story centered on half-twins Jade and Billie as they learn the truth of the Umbrella Corporation's dark secrets and its history with their father, Lance Reddick's Albert Wesker. Alongside the John Wick star, the cast for the series includes Ella Balinska, Adeline Rudolph, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong and Paola Núñez. Having premiered this week to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, Resident Evil has left a number of plot threads open for future seasons and the man at the helm has plenty of ideas where it could go.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for the series, Andrew Dabb shared his thoughts on what the future could hold for Netflix's Resident Evil. The showrunner said a potential season 2 will feature even more video game elements, describing season 1 as "basic Resident Evil" and excitedly discussing the possibility of exploring the crazier side of the games. See what Dabb shared below:

"I would say season one is like basic Resident Evil. There's zombies, there are some hybrids. As you and I both know, as you go further in the games, things get real crazy. And I very much want to get to the crazy place. I want to keep things going. And so hopefully, in season 2 and maybe beyond, we'll be able to incorporate more elements from the games."

Dabb built a lot of anticipation for the Resident Evil series in the lead up to its premiere with his discussions of how it would connect to the video games, promising no major retcons to past stories and confirming every game was canon within the show. Though some were concerned how this would fare in regards to Albert Wesker, given his canonical death in Resident Evil 5, those worries were mostly put to bed as the show would explain in a 2005 flashback to the Arklay Mountains that Wesker had cloned himself and the one seen in the 2022 timeline was a variant of himself while the original had been burned to a crisp in a volcano. The Resident Evil series also featured a slew of iconic monsters and Easter eggs, ranging from the zombified dogs to the return of the Red9 from Resident Evil 4 and the use of "Moonlight Sonata" for puzzle solving.

As Dabb notes, Resident Evil season 1 ends in a place for a number of major video game elements to make their way to the screen in a potential season 2. The most notable for fans of the games is sure to be that of Ada Wong, whose name was seen in the finale and who Dabb has also confirmed will be seen in season 2 should Netflix renew the series. While audiences await what the future holds for the show, they can catch up with Resident Evil season 1 now streaming on Netflix.
