Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Resident Evil.

Already a looming presence within the franchise, series developer Andrew Dabb says Resident Evil season 2 will explore more of Umbrella's history. Lance Reddick is leading the cast of the Netflix series as iconic antagonist Albert Wesker, Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Adeline Rudolph, Siena Agudong, Paola Núñez, Ahad Raza Mir and Turlough Convery. Constantin Film, the studio behind the Resident Evil movies, is producing the show with Moonlighting Films, who joined the franchise with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, and Netflix.

The Resident Evil series is set across two timelines in 2022 and 2036, the former of which will center on Wesker moving his half-twin daughters to the Umbrella-built New Raccoon City in South Africa and continuing his experiments with the T-virus under the shadow of Umbrella owner Evelyn Marcus. The future timeline will follow Jade as she works with an underground group of scientists known as The University to put the world back on track after a new T-virus outbreak, all while on the run from the Umbrella Corporation. Resident Evil has left a number of promising paths for the show to take and the man leading the charge knows one major element he's interested in exploring.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Andrew Dabb opened up about what could come from Resident Evil season 2. When asked about any particular games he'd like to explore, the showrunner expressed an interest in further exploring Umbrella's history after diving into a bit with a season 1 character. See what Dabb said below:

"I think there are moments that we're really excited to explore, especially in the history of Umbrella, which has kind of this very dark and and interesting history. And we have both of the Wesker characters, also through the Evelyn Marcus character and her ties to James Marcus, one of the founders of umbrella. We have a lot of opportunity to kind of dive into that lore, which we again in success we hope to do."

The Umbrella Corporation has served as the main antagonist for most of the Resident Evil video games, with their shady experiments and treacherous business dealings resulting in various viruses being released to the world, including from scientists betrayed by the company. After minor references in the original game, subsequent Resident Evil titles have branched out Umbrella's backstory, including it being founded by British royal descendants Oswell E. Spencer, owner of the iconic Spencer Mansion, Edward Ashford and Dr. James Marcus and its ties to international bio-terror threats, including Resident Evil Village's Mother Miranda, who inspired the launch of the company. With the Resident Evil series expanding all the way to 2036, that leaves nearly 70 years of Umbrella's history for Dabb and his writers to explore.

Resident Evil season 1 offered some intriguing expansions of Umbrella's history for fans of the games, namely in its new owner Evelyn Marcus, daughter of Umbrella co-founder and T-virus creator James Marcus. Between flashbacks to Evelyn learning of Wesker having cloned himself to the exact cause of the new outbreak still unknown, Dabb's tease of exploring more of Evelyn's ties with Wesker and her father in season 2 point towards future dives into how she came to take over running Umbrella, as well as where she's been for most of the games' stories. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with Resident Evil season 1 now streaming on Netfilx.
