A recent photo from the set of the Resident Evil reboot has confirmed the film's connection to the iconic video game, Resident Evil 2. Directed by Johannes Roberts from a screenplay by Greg Russo, the new Resident Evil is a forthcoming horror film that serves as a remake of Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil film series, which he loosely adapted from Capcom's wildly popular video-game series of the same name. The Resident Evil film franchise spanned six movies, all featuring Milla Jovovich in the lead role. Initially, the films followed their source material closely. But, as time went by, the future iterations wandered off in a different direction, much to the contempt of critics and video game enthusiasts. The Resident Evil reboot, however, has taken to doing things differently this time around. The new movie—which is set in Racoon City in 1998—will delve into the origins of the story.

The Resident Evil reboot movie was first announced in 2018. Initially, James Wan was slated to be an executive producer. But Wan exited the project in favor of the Mortal Kombat reboot, and later Roberts was hired to write and direct the movie. During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Roberts revealed that the reboot film will be more grounded to the video games and it will offer unprecedented scares, unlike the previous movies which were more action-focused. Recently, a photo from the sets of the new Resident Evil movie has emerged, and it further affirms Roberts' claim about the film's connection to a core game from Capcom's original series.

On Thursday, Resident Evil enthusiast Biohazard Declassified tweeted a picture from the set of the movie reboot. The image shows a diner called Emmy's in Sudbury, Ontario, where the film is being shot. Emmy's is the diner that Claire was inside during her opening cutscene in the 1998 video game Resident Evil 2. The Resident Evil reboot movie has apparently remodeled a Canadian cafe called Gus's Restaurant into the diner from the game, in its efforts to pay homage to the source material. Take a look at the set photos below.

As it has been previously revealed, the Resident Evil reboot movie will center on the classic game characters Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and Chris Redfield instead of Jovovich's Alice, who was the main character in the previous Resident Evil films. While the plot of the new movie hasn't yet been revealed it has been suggested that the reboot will explore the hidden secrets behind the walls of the foreboding Spencer Mansion. Last month, the cast for the Resident Evil reboot was announced, with Maze Runner's Kaya Scodelario playing Claire Redfield and Ant-Man and The Wasp's Hannah John-Kamen essaying Valentine. A few days later, Gotham's Donal Logue was also added to the movie's ensemble as Raccoon City's Chief of Police, Brian Irons.

The emergence of a new set photo means that things are pretty much on track for the Resident Evil reboot and we might learn more details about the upcoming movie soon. Over the years the Resident Evil films have been subject to sharp criticism for their blatant dismissal of the source material's premise. But, as it now appears, the new movie is not aiming to be a hyperkinetic action piece like the previous ones. Rather, it is, very carefully, adopting the nuances, characters, props, and locations from the video games as to make its narrative scary and tense, just the way the franchise admirers want it. The new movie is shaping up to be a love letter to longtime Resident Evil fans, a dream come true that will help them get over their disdain for the earlier films.
