The next Resident Evil game is called Project Resistance, and it looks like it it could be a four-player co-op game. Resident Evil is Capcom’s best-selling franchise, having sold 90 million units as of this February.

Capcom and the Resident Evil franchise have been seeing a lot of success lately. In 2018, Monster Hunter World brought one of Capcom’s core franchises to the mainstream, and Devil May Cry 5 and the Resident Evil 2 remake made 2019 a year of great Capcom games. Even before Resident Evil 2 reimagined the classic game successfully, Resident Evil 7 was a critical success, redefining what a Resident Evil game could look like by going first-person. Based on some leaked information about Project Resistance, it looks like Capcom might once again be mixing up the series’ gameplay.

Capcom recently put up a Project Resistance teaser website that reveals little information about the project. From the way the “R” and “E” in “RESISTANCE” are highlighted, it’s clear the title is a Resident Evil game, but there’s not much else to go on. The site does say that Capcom “is embarking on a new project,” which seems to imply Project Resistance will take the series in a direction it hasn’t gone before. Users on Resetera were able to extract full-size thumbnail images from a link to an upcoming Project Resistance livestream, and it certainly looks like a different take on Resident Evil.

The images are dark and a bit blurry, but four characters can be seen, each armed with a weapon and standing together in the face of an unseen threat. This alone brings to mind four-player co-op survival horror, not unlike Valve’s Left 4 Dead. The name, “Resistance,” even signals co-op, as if players will team up to resist an overwhelming force. The Resetera moderator who started the thread where the images were posted said they had been told it was a 4v1 multiplayer game, in the vein of something like Evolve, but there’s no concrete evidence so far to confirm that.

Capcom recently called for fans to come test an unannounced Resident Evil game, so it would make sense that Project Resistance is multiplayer, as it would theoretically require more players for testing than a single-player game would. Whatever kind of co-op or versus multiplayer Project Resistance turns out to be, it could be a risky move for Capcom, since the series has traditionally been fairly linear and narrative-focused. According to the Project Resistance website, a teaser trailer for the game will be revealed on Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. ET. Project Resistance will then be further showcased at the Tokyo Game Show 2019 from Sept. 12 to 15.
