All things must come to an end eventually and so it will be with the Resident Evil movies next year; or, to be more exact, the ones headlined by Milla Jovovich as the undead-slaying Alice, with Jovovich's husband Paul W.S. Anderson writing and/or directing behind the camera. The final installment in the duo's run on the video game-turned film series, fittingly titled Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, picks up shortly after the events of the fifth installment, Retribution - with Alice being the only survivor of humanity's would-be last stand against the zombie masses. Now, however, it's on Alice to head home (literally) and travel to Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is preparing for its final battle against her and her fellow apocalypse survivors.
The previously-released trailers for The Final Chapter have highlighted Alice's trip "home"; at the same time, serving up quick flashes of the kinetic action and thrills that the Resident Evil movie franchise is best known for (unlike their earlier, more horror-driven video game counterparts). One such bit of action will take on the form of a fight sequence in a hallway of sorts - complete with moving lasers - between Alice and her old nemesis Dr. Alexander Isaacs (Ian Glen), whose last in-person appearance in a Resident Evil movie was nearly a decade ago, in Resident Evil: Extinction.
Screen Gems has now unveiled a second full-length trailer for The Final Chapter; one that places more of an emphasis on the impending showdown between Alice and Dr. Isaacs, at the same time also pulling back the curtain on the film's over-arching storyline just a bit further. You can check out the video (which premiered during The Final Chapter's panel at the 2016 New York Comic-Con), above.
Seeing as The Final Chapter is, well, the final hurrah for Anderson, Jovovich and their longtime collaborators on the Resident Evil films, it's only appropriate that the movie's cast include familiar faces from the previous installments in the franchise, in order to help bring this circle to a close. Among them are Ali Larter as Claire Redfield, Shawn Roberts as Albert Wesker - and again, Glen (now better known by most as Jorah Mormont on Game of Thrones) as Dr. Isaacs. Other players in this movie include Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black), Eoin Macken (The Night Shift), and William Levy (The Tempest), as well as Japanese model/actress, Rola, in supporting roles.
While The Final Chapter will hopefully deliver a satisfying ending to Alice's saga for the longtime fans of Anderson's films, the question remains: will Screen Gems decided to reboot and/or relaunch the franchise in the immediate future, once Anderson and Jovovich have "retired"? While that's certainly a possibility, it could also be some time before a relaunch of the series happens on the big screen. After all, fifteen years will have passed since her last film when video game-born adventurer Lara Croft returns to theaters with 2018's Tomb Raider reboot. So, with that in mind, it may be a while before we know for sure if The Final Chapter is, indeed, just that for both Alice and the Resident Evil movies.
