A new Resident Evil card game has been announced and is set to task players with exploring the iconic Spencer Mansion as one of two of the series' most beloved characters. Capcom's survival horror series has transcended the world of video games, spawning movies, an upcoming Netflix series, as well as Resident Evil board games, but now the franchise will expand again with a card game.

It's been a good year for Resident Evil fans, with no shortage of horror content spanning from the launch of a new mainline game to various movie and show announcements and releases. As well as the launch of Resident Evil Village earlier this year, players also got to experience the CG series, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and fans still have the upcoming Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City movie to look forward to, as well as the future live-action Netflix series. As for RE games, Village's DLC has been confirmed to be in development, while the multiplayer caper Re:Verse is releasing in 2022.

There's even more Resident Evil to get excited for in 2022 thanks to Resident Evil: The Card Game. In a feature from Dicebreaker, it's revealed the upcoming new game will see up to four players control one of two fan-favorite heroes, Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, working together to complete objectives. The game will be set within the Spencer Mansion, and players will need to battle with zombies to escape with their lives. Exploration will be a big focus, with players choosing action cards to use before working their way through the Mansion. Iconic RE items, including Green Herbs, will feature in the card game, and as often seen in survival horror, players will be able to fight or run from their enemies. According to Dicebreaker, Resident Evil: The Card Game has been created with old-school video games in mind, harkening back to the days when players would pass the controller between friends. Resident Evil: The Card Game comes from publisher Gen X Games, and is targeting an early 2022 release window.

Resident Evil: The Card Game is set to pay homage to the original PlayStation classic, not just with its premise and story, but also with its features. As well as including multiple elements from the original 1996 release such as Jill's Knife, locked doors, and lots of undead, the Resident Evil game will also feature boss battles. Gamers should feel right at home with what's promised to be a challenging game, though an "easy mode" can lower the difficulty. Once completed, a "New Game Plus" mode will introduce additional items for fans' next playthrough, ensuring replayability is a factor.

With many games in the Resident Evil canon, it's possible that this is just the beginning for Resident Evil: The Card Game. Expansions or even new editions of the core game could introduce more Resident Evil locations and characters in the future. The premise of the game sounds like it could easily adapt to other series favorites that focus mainly on a singular building, such as the Baker Mansion in Resident Evil 7. The potential for Resident Evil: The Card Game is only limited by its reception, though with close ties to the origins of the franchise, this is likely one card game RE fans won't want to miss.
