Resident Evil 8, also known as Resident Evil Village, was one of the biggest surprises of the PS5 reveal event. After two impressive remakes, Village is taking the franchise back on the path that Resident Evil 7 set up, with first-person gameplay and all.
Equally surprising is the drastic change in tone Resident Evil 8 is taking, as the trailer was filled with tons of magic and occult elements, and even features a werewolf of all things. Resident Evil Village Takes Place After Every Other Game
In the Resident Evil timeline Resident Evil 7 took place in July-August of 2017. By comparison, Resident Evil 6 took place in 2013 while Umbrella Corps is set in 2016. This means that Resident Evil 7 was the furthest in the timeline fans had seen, and that same idea applies to Resident Evil 8. Village is set an unspecified "few years" after the events of RE 7, with Mia and Ethan Winters settling down and trying to start a life together. Unfortunately, as the trailer shows, that life is upended when Chris Redfield appears and brutally murders Mia for unknown reasons.
There are a lot of unknowns about Resident Evil 8's plot; why does Chris kill Mia, what's the secret behind the creepy village Ethan visits, and does Blue Umbrella still exist? Considering it's the furthest the series has gone yet, the world could be a very different place from what it was in Resident Evil 7. Mainline Resident Evil games typically take place in the year they're released, or plus or minus a year. Because of that, Resident Evil 8 will most likely take place in 2020 or 2021.
