The Resident Evil series has seen a huge resurgence in recent years starting with the wildly different Resident Evil 7, then moving onto the ambitious remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Considering the series has spent the last few years remaking past titles, there's a big question as to which direction Resident Evil 8 is going to go.

Will Resident Evil 8 return to the first-person style used in the last mainline game, or adopt the third-person style of the remakes? While the eighth game hasn't officially been confirmed, there is already a wealth of rumors out there.

With the PS5 and Xbox Series X on the way it's only a matter of time, so here's everything we know about Resident Evil 8.

Resident Evil 8 Release Date

Resident Evil 7 Baker Family

Considering Resident Evil 8 hasn't been officially announced it's hard to give a time frame on when the game could release, but rumors suggest that Capcom is eyeing 2021 as a possibility. Leads about Resident Evil 8 have sprung up since the beginning of 2020, but one of the most recent ones says the game will launch in Q1 2021 and has the development subtitle of "Village." Considering Resident Evil 7 released in 2017, that would mean RE 8 would have a development timeline of four years. Of course, Capcom did release the remake but they've likely been working on a new title in the background as well. Considering the 2021 date it's likely that Resident Evil 8 will be on PS5 and Xbox Series X, or be a cross-generation game.

Resident Evil 8 Story

Resident Evil 7 Chris

Resident Evil 7 was a big deviation for the series, both in terms of gameplay and story. It didn't feature any of the iconic heroes and villains of the series, that is, until the end of the game. The recent leaks to Biohazard Declassified claim that Chris Redfield will play a central role in RE8, although this time he'll take on a more antagonistic role. The game will feature flashbacks with Chris and RE7 hero Ethan Winters, who will likely take the starring role once again. Other info, like the Village subtitle, points to RE8 taking place a small, secluded European village, must like Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 8 Gameplay

There aren't as many rumors out there about Resident Evil 8's gameplay, but there's still some indication of what the game might feature. A Resident Evil 8 rumor from the Capcom leaker AestheticGamer says that the game will sport wildly different ideas. The rumor says that RE8 started development as Resident Evil Revelations 3 before changing to a mainline title. The game will once again be first-person and put a focus on occult elements, hallucinations, and distrust of other characters. Keep in mind that all these rumors about gameplay and story are just that, rumors. Even though there will inevitably be a Resident Evil 8 these details haven't been confirmed, even if they have been corroborated.
