German retailer GamesOnly listed Resident Evil 8 for PS4 on its website, accidentally leaking a potential current-gen version of the still-unconfirmed title. The upcoming sequel follows-up Capcom’s 2017 series reboot, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The game reoriented the franchise, focusing on horror over action and thrusting the player directly into the scares via its first-person perspective.

Resident Evil 8 will be the first new, mainline Resident Evil game in nearly three years, but Capcom has stoked fan demand with two remakes of early entries in the series. Resident Evil 2: Remake updated the 1998 original, switching the perspective from the game’s notorious tank controls to a modern, over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective. The game also expanded the role of Mr. X, a bulky, blank-eyed monster who stalks Leon Kennedy through the halls of the Raccoon City Police Department. Earlier this year, the company published Resident Evil 3, a reimagining of 1999’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, to slightly less acclaim.

The listing for Resident Evil 8, posted by Twitter user KenXyro, included temporary box art featuring what appeared to be an image reminiscent of Resident Evil 4. The title on the store page named the game Resident Evil 8: Village [uncut], with “uncut” signaling that the game won’t be censored for German players. KenXyro also included a snippet of text from the game’s description which claimed the game will be “darkest and cruelest addition to the franchise."

Posts from trusted Twitter leaker, AestheticGamer1 suggest Resident Evil 8 will be a cross-gen title, appearing on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The game will purportedly be the franchise’s most gruesome entry to date, though exactly what that means has yet to be revealed. Capcom will likely announce Resident Evil 8  this month and release it early next year, but whether the ongoing pandemic will affect the game’s release is currently unknown.

Capcom brought new life to its flagging franchise by stripping the series back to its basics. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard told a small-scale story with a cast of almost entirely new characters. Callbacks were few and the game adopted a grittier tone than its predecessor, the much-maligned Resident Evil 6. Resident Evil 8 marks Capcom’s first foray back into the wider world of the series and will necessitate a light touch for it to reach the heights of the reboot. But, if Capcom’s recent work on Resident Evil 2: Remake and Resident Evil 3 are any indication, Resident Evil 8 is in good hands.
