Capcom's Resident Evil Village has already been out for a month, and the newest title in the Resident Evil series is one of the most successful entries that Capcom has released to date. The game has already sold over 4 million copies and led the UK sales charts during the month of May. Along with memorable characters and pulse-pounding survival horror, Resident Evil Village includes many different difficulties for players to choose from to personalize the challenge to fit their taste.

Resident Evil Village follows the adventures of Ethan Winters as he fights to save his daughter Rose from Mother Miranda and her monstrous Four Lords. The Eastern European village that the game takes place in is crawling with all sorts of disturbing creatures, with each faction that represents each Lord full of unique challenges for Ethan to face. Luckily, players are able to tailor how much of a struggle the seemingly invincible Ethan Winters will endure during his journey.

The Resident Evil franchise is well-known for including many different difficulties that range from extremely easy to a ridiculously hard challenge. Outside of the normal difficulties, Capcom also usually includes some kind of bonus difficulty that raises the challenge significantly. Resident Evil Village continues the trend by offering many different difficulty choices that allow for extreme replay value.

RE Village's Difficulty Settings, From Easiest To Hardest

Resident Evil Village PS5 Showcase Trailer

Players are able to select the difficulty that they want to experience Resident Evil Village's story immediately after beginning a new playthrough. There are three main difficulties to choose from in the base game: Casual, Standard, and Hardcore. Village of Shadows is the final difficulty in the RE Village, but there are unique caveats that prevent players from accessing this difficulty until much later.

Casual difficulty is the recommended difficulty for beginners, as the mode lets players focus on enjoying Resident Evil Village's story and gameplay without too much of a challenge. Enemies have less health and deal less damage, and the aim assist that players have when aiming their weapons covers a larger range than other difficulties. Standard difficulty is defined as the "average difficulty" for players, with the game providing a decent challenge without being too difficult to complete.

The Hardcore difficulty is where the challenge begins to pick up, with enemies hitting harder and players having less resources available in the fight to survive the events of Resident Evil Village. Village of Shadows difficulty is the absolute hardest difficulty in the game, and is similar to Resident Evil 7's Madhouse difficulty by spreading checkpoints further apart, introducing enemies found later in the story much earlier, increasing the number of enemies in each area, and greatly increasing the health of all of the bosses in the game. The difficulty can be accessed instantly by purchasing the Trauma Pack DLC, but the most typical way of unlocking the mode is by beating the game on any of the base difficulties. With Resident Evil 9 an inevitable release for Capcom, players can enjoy Resident Evil Village on every difficulty until then.
