Video game movies have been a tough nut to crack for Hollywood for multiple decades now. Upcoming projects in the forms of Assassin's Creed (starring Michael Fassbender) and the Tomb Raider reboot (starring Alicia Vikander) have potential, but such infamous flops as Super Mario Bros, House of The Dead and Doom continue looming large in the background; not to mention, the decidedly mixed critical/commercial success of this year's release, Warcraft.
The lone exception to that rule of video game movies for the past 15 years (or so) now has been Resident Evil, a film series derided by many fans of the original Resident Evil games - but supported by others and, moreover, successful enough to have now spawned six sequels featuring star Milla Jovovich and her husband, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson. All things must end eventually, though, and the upcoming Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will do just that for Jovovich and Anderson's run on the franchise.
The first trailer for The Final Chapter arrives next week, as teased by the following preview released through Jovovich's social media accounts. Said clip features an unidentified man's voice asking Jovovich's Alice "What are we going to do?", to which she replies "We're going to kill every last one of them!" before riding a motorcycle through a series of explosions in costuming and overall aesthetic that recalls the post-apocalyptic look of the third installment, Resident Evil: Extinction, from 2007.

While sharing some similar story and character threads with the Resident Evil game series, the films have established a continuity of their own. They've shown Jovovich's Alice going from being a onetime amnesiac to a superhuman bioweapon, an army of clones and then back again - all while a global apocalypse unfolds in the wake of a zombie outbreak caused by The Umbrella Corporation. The main characters from the games, including Chris & Claire Redfield, Albert Wesker and Jill Valentine have appeared in the films too, in supporting roles.
Here is the official synopsis for The Final Chapter:
Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opens in U.S. theaters on January 27th, 2017.
