Getting an S and S+ rank for each difficulty in Resident Evil 4 Remake will require players to plan ahead and know where they are going. Players familiar with the Resident Evil series will know that they are given a rank at the end of the game for how well they are perceived to play. The ranks spread from B to S+, which are determined by the game based on a couple of variables.

Rank in the Resident Evil franchise can vary in how they are achieved, but the requirements are often based on the time spent finishing Resident Evil 4 Remake as well as the number of saves. Some games and game modes have an auto-save that can checkpoint progress, while others do not. This continues to be the case in the Resident Evil 4 Remake, which continues the time-honored tradition of grading players’ progress.

Earning Every Rank In Resident Evil 4 Remake

Chapter Results in Resident Evil 4 Remake give players an indication of their current score

There are four possible ranks in the Resident Evil 4 Remake. Rank B is the lowest possible rank to earn, but it will also be the most common rank for first-time players to get when they finish the game. Players should not expect to get more when completing the game for the first time. Earning higher ranks is often saved for a second or third playthrough when players are familiar enough with the game’s puzzles. S+ is the highest possible rank, followed by S, then A, then B.

A B rank is achievable simply for finishing the game on any difficulty in any game mode. As of now, there is a regular game mode as well as the New Game+, which allows players to play through the game again but with all their Resident Evil 4 Remake weapons fully upgraded and any items in Leon’s Attaché case. However, players should be aware he does not have any key items or other items that would allow him to unlock areas ahead of time. Therefore, he must also complete any Merchant side quests from scratch.

While the B rank is fairly straightforward, the other ranks have more requirements. Below is a chart detailing what players must do to complete each rank:

Tips For Getting the S+ Rank

Saving At The Proper Moment in Resident Evil 4 Remake at a typewriter

As seen in the table, the S+ rank requires players to have a new save, meaning weapons will be the same starting weapons from the base game, and Leon will not have much to help him. However, players can use anything they have unlocked from the Bonus Content store. This means that they can use the weapons unlocked from that store and any unlockable costumes or accessories in Resident Evil 4 Remake with bonuses, such as the Deer Antlers. Tips for what items to grab specifically are listed below.

On Professional Difficulty, there are no Auto Saves, so if Leon dies, the game will revert to the last typewriter save. This is important because the time required is very little, so starting over from further back can make it challenging to finish the game in the allotted amount of time. Be aware of important typewriter locations and the best fifteen moments to save. This might differ for each player, depending on what they struggle with the most in the game.

When dying in Hardcore or Professional mode, quit the game to the main menu and reload the last save. This will allow players to not count the time they just spent before the death, so they are restarting the timer from where they last saved. This can save some precious minutes, but it also means players must make good use of the 15 typewriter saves on Professional difficulty. Players should also be on the lookout for how to skip battles in Resident Evil 4 Remake, as this will save a lot of time.

Useful Items For Earning S+ Rank

Challenge Points become very important for earning S ranks in the Resident Evil 4 Remake

As noted, Leon can bring any bonus content into a blank save if it's purchased. This includes items such as the Suit of Armor for Ashley can keep her from being hurt or kidnapped, which allows Leon to focus on the goal instead of constantly chasing Ashley. Additionally, this can make Resident Evil 4 Remake run a little faster. There are also three weapons available in the Bonus Content store, as well as two potential upgrades to starting weapons from the Deluxe Edition or DLC purchase. While some of these are locked behind other challenges, such as finding all 16 Clockwork Castellans, they can all be earned before attempting to complete an S+ run on Professional Difficulty.

Items to consider include the following:

  • Weapon: Primal Knife - Never breaks or needs repairs
  • Weapon: Hand Cannon (Magnum)
  • Weapon: Chicago Sweeper (SMG)
  • Costume: Armor - Makes Ashley immune to damage
  • Any Accessory that provides boosts: Wolf Tail, Deer Antlers, Chicken Hat

All of these items will cost CP, which players will earn by simply playing the game. Therefore, save the CP for the more valuable items before investing in other costumes, models, and bonuses that do not affect gameplay.

The Cat Ears Accessory also provides a bonus, but it is only available after earning the S+ Rank in Professional Mode. This means it will not be useful in earning an initial S+ Rank. However, the items listed can be unlocked using CP to buy them in the Bonus Content menu. Once purchased, a trip to a Typewriter will show the items in storage. Players can then move them in or out of storage.

A last item to consider, although not one available in the Bonus Content store, is the single-use Rocket Launcher in the Resident Evil 4 Remake. While the Infinite Rocket Launcher will not be available, the single-use one may still be a good purchase for anyone hoping to save some time. This is recommended in the last boss fight against Lord Saddler, as it will decrease the time spent in what can be an otherwise long-lasting boss fight in Resident Evil 4 Remake.

With these tips and some bonus items, players should be able to complete the game on harder modes and still achieve the S+ Rank. When players get an S+ Rank in every difficulty, they will know the ins and outs of every puzzle and boss fights in the Resident Evil 4 Remake. With all that experience behind him, Leon Kennedy will be ready for anything.
