Resident Evil 2 Fan Mod Adds DMX Song To The Game

Resident Evil 2 Remake Tyrant Mr X Image

A fun new fan mod has added a DMX song to the remake of Resident Evil 2. One of the most memorable creatures encountered in the original Resident Evil 2 was Mr. X, a trench coat wearing, Terminator-style figure who stalked players throughout the second campaign. He would crop up at inopportune times to corner gamers, walking slowly towards them as they desperately unloaded whatever ammo they had into him, hoping it would knock him down. He would never stay dead though, so there was always the fear of his next appearance.

There was no way he wasn’t going to reappear in the Resident Evil 2 remake, and he soon became the breakout character of the game. He’s even more relentless in the remake, with just the sound of his stomping boots enough to inspire dread. He can also stalk players from room to room and he’s much harder to shake off. He’s also inspired a meme, where players have added DMX’s song "X Gon' Give It To Ya" to various videos of their encounters with him, which works surprisingly well.

The Resident Evil 2 remake has been popular in the fan modder community, inspiring mods that add a first-person view and another with fixed camera angles, like the original game. Now a fan named DJPop has created a mod that replaces Mr. X's theme with DMX’s "X Gon' Give It To Ya" in certain areas. While this undoubtedly reduces the stress involved with fighting the character, it’s also pretty funny.

The novelty of the DMX mod will likely wear off after a few encounters, but it will be interesting to see what the mod community comes out with next. Given the popularity of the original game’s unreleased prototype Resident Evil 1.5, it’s probably only a matter of time before fans try to recreate it using the remake’s engine. Free DLC content will also be added for Resident Evil 2 this month in the form of The Ghost Survivors, a bonus mode following characters like Robert Kendo.

Resident Evil 2 has been a huge success for Capcom, critically and commercially. There’s already talk of what direction Resident Evil 8 might take, with reports suggesting it will be set on a deserted, Umbrella-owned private island. The game is also said to feature a hallucination mechanic, which was an early, unused concept for Resident Evil 4. Capcom is apparently already working on a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis too, which found Jill Valentine trying to survive the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City while being stalked by the Nemesis, an unkillable tyrant armed with a rocket launcher.
