Update: Quibi sets Reno 911! season 7 to premiere Monday, May 4th.

Reno 911! is returning after 10 years, though it might not be in the exact form that fans expected. A parody of Cops in the style of a mockumentary, Reno 911! aired from 2003 to 2009 on Comedy Central. The series followed the exceptionally incompetent workers in the fictional Reno Sheriff’s Department. The cast included Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Cedric Yarbrough, Niecy Nash, and Mary Birdsong. Even though the series spawned its own movie, which featured cameos from Dwayne Johnson and Paul Rudd, talk of the cult comedy’s revival has persisted since the end of its initial run. Now, it looks to be finally happening.

Among the many elements which helped Reno 911! stand out was that only the basic plot outline of an episode would be scripted, while the dialogue and banter between characters was regularly improvised. This helped give the mockumentary an added layer of realism. The meta element of the show was often referenced as well, with characters complaining about how only their moments of ineptitude were being highlighted. The good work they did, they insisted, was being ignored. This was sly commentary on the supposedly real programs which Reno 911! was meant to spoof, arguing that reality television only offered an edited and skewed version of the truth. It’s the kind of commentary that has only grown more relevant in the decade since Reno 911! ended.

According to Variety, the revival of Reno 911! will happen at the upcoming streaming service Quibi. Rather than a reboot or a reimagining, as has been the case with other properties, the project is being referred to in reports as simply a new season of the show which originated at Comedy Central. Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant and Kerri Kenney-Silver, who created the series, will be returning to reprise their roles in front of the camera. The trio will also be involved with the writing process. Additional casting announcements are forthcoming, with other original on-screen members of Reno 911! possibly returning. Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher, who were involved as executive producers for the comedy’s initial run, will be resuming those responsibilities for the Quibi revival.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first attempt to ready the bumbling officers at the Reno Sheriff’s Department for a comeback. Back in 2011, news began to surface that Netflix might be interested in more Reno 911!. Plans ultimately fell through. Comedy Central, who had sole rights to the comedy, had not been involved in negotiations. Another issue was that two of the creators, Lennon and Garant, were involved with other projects at the time.

Almost a decade out from those Netflix reports, Reno 911! will be back at Quibi. That means the comedy might be presented a little differently, given Quibi’s commitment to offering content in quick bites. Still, with how popular newer law enforcement reality shows like Live PD are, there will be plenty of fresh material to spoof.
