A reboot of The Ren & Stimpy Show is coming to Comedy Central. The animated series premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991 and quickly became a pop culture phenomenon for its dark humor, bizarre characters, and jokes geared to more adult audiences. Now the iconic dog and cat duo are making a return.

Comedy Central has greenlit a reboot of Ren & Stimpy described as a 'reimagined' take on the hit 90's series. "We are excited to take on this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio," said ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group President Chris McCarthy. "Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations."

The Ren & Stimpy reboot is part of Comedy Central's latest push into adult animation shows. The network has revived Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head and picked up the Daria spin-off, Jodie. Comedy Central also airs repeats of the adult animated shows Bojack Horseman and Seth MacFarlane's The Cleveland Show. Though Ren & Stimpy launched on Nickelodeon in the same era as other popular cartoons like Rugrats and Doug, the series featured more adult content and often took heat for its crass jokes and references to politics and religion.

Created by John Kricfalusi, Ren & Stimpy followed the adventures of Ren, a temperamental and, often, violent chihuahua, and his good-natured and dimwitted cat sidekick, Stimpy. The series aired for five seasons on Nickelodeon before ending in 1995. The show's success led to a spin-off series in 2003 called Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon, but only three episodes aired before it was canceled. Happy Happy Joy Joy, a documentary by Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood about Ren & Stimpy, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. An episode premiere date has not yet been announced for the series reboot.
