Sometimes individuals on Snapchat may want to remove unwelcome members from their group chat. While social media remains a tool for communication, it can sometimes become a toxic environment that disrupts the platform, and on occasion, this can happen within a group that was previously not as toxic.

Snapchat’s premise is simple; an individual takes a Snap and sends it to designated user, group, or shares it on their Snap Story. Moreover, members can send friends messages in the form of text, images and short clips, and once a series of Snaps has been initiated, a Snap streak has been created. Members can also subscribe to brands and companies that offer professionally designed Stories with a series of episodes.

According to Snapchat, group chats are simple to make; on the other hand, removing someone is not such an easy task. In fact, the action to have someone removed from a chat can be so difficult that it may be easier for members to just ghost the unwelcomed individual. This is because Snapchat does not allow others to remove a person from a Snapchat group. However, there are options available.

When Moderation Is Not Included

The Snapchat ghost is not there to encourage friends to exclude another and form a private group, but the lack of internal moderation can be a problem. While there's no easy way to remove an individual from a group, it's relatively easy to create a new and exclusive group without the unwanted members. Snapchat allows chats to have a maximum size of 31 friends, and provides customization tools that grant users the authority to change the group name and determine how quickly messages are erased. To start a new group, tap the speech bubble icon in the top-right corner of the chat tab, and initiate a new group with the desired members. Group members can abandon their former chat by tapping the options icon in the top-right corner of the old chat’s menu and then tapping the red “Leave Group” option. Alternatively, members can directly ask the unwelcome Snapchatter to remove themselves from the group.

The lack of moderation tools can damper the capabilities of a chat. An individual who may no longer be welcome could refuse to leave, and in spite of the request, create an insufferable situation. Moreover, it is unlikely that an inactive person would leave the chat to make room for others. Furthermore, the decision to make a new group chat could easily cause disorganization and confusion, and at the same time, ghosting others means that the group leaves behind a cache of saved messages. In the future, Snapchat might consider the possibility of granting a person moderation abilities and the power to kick others from a chat, but until then, the options to remove someone remain limited.
