Marvel Television and Luke Cage star Mike Colter are mourning the loss of prolific actor Reg E. Cathey, whose final role was playing Luke Cage’s father in the upcoming season 2 of the Netflix series. Fans and the entertainment industry were shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Cathey, who died Friday at age 59 after a reported battle with lung cancer. Cathey, whose career spanned more than 30 years with more than 80 roles on both film and television, was perhaps best known for his turns in the TV dramas Oz, The Wire and House of Cards, the latter of which earned him a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in 2015.
Though details of Cathey’s cancer battle have yet to be fully revealed, the illness clearly didn’t stop the acclaimed actor from working, with a role in the Cinemax series Outcast in 2017, and most recently, a turn in the indie drama Tyrel last month.

Now, it appears that fans will be blessed with one last appearance by the Emmy winner, with a high-profile role opposite Colter. Marvel Television revealed in a statement Saturday that Cathey had filmed a pivotal role for the second season of Luke Cage, which will debut sometime this year. The studio says:
“Everyone at Marvel Television is deeply saddened by the loss of Reg E. Cathey. It was an honor to work with him and to know him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. In ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ Season 2, Reg played James Lucas, Luke’s father. We were lucky enough to experience the magic that was Reg in his final performance.”
Go gentle into that good night my brother. It was an honor spending time with you on set. Getting to know you as a person and an artist. You will be missed. Condolences to your family. I salute you. #Reg E. Cathey😢 https://t.co/4tNWpRoZrm— Mike Colter (@realmikecolter) February 10, 2018
The information revealed by Marvel seems to shed more light on why Colter was among the people in the entertainment industry who were tweeting out their condolences after news of Cathey’s passing broke. While Colter didn’t specifically refer to Luke Cage, he noted in his tweet how it was “an honor” spending time with Cathey on the set, and getting to know him “as a person and and artist.”
Cathey’s work as father to the superhero with immense strength and unbreakable skin was actually his second Marvel project. Cathey also had a starring role in the 2015 reboot of Marvel’s Fantastic Four, which was released by Twentieth Century Fox and not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite the film’s harsh reception from both fans and critics, there’s no question that Cathey was memorable as usual as Dr. Franklin Storm, the father of Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan) and Sue Storm (Kate Mara).
In due time fans will learn just how much Cathey will appear as Luke Cage’s father, but no matter how large or small the role is, the actor is sure to impress with his undeniable charisma and unmistakable baritone voice. It’s a voice that will no doubt echo throughout Luke Cage’s second season, as fans and colleagues remember Cathey’s lasting contributions to the series and the film and television industry as a whole.
