An update from developer Arkane Studios reveals that vampire shooter Redfall can be played entirely alone or with a group of other players. The developer is most well-known for crafting immersive RPGs like Dishonored and Prey, but its next project will delve into the realm of multiplayer first-person shooters. A Redfall co-op gameplay trailer was recently revealed during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase event, and now Arkane is shedding more sunlight on the vampire-hunting adventure.

Redfall will take players to the titular Massachusetts town following a hostile invasion from the blood-sucking undead. A clan of vampires has somehow managed to block out the sun, giving them an eternal reign over Redfall and putting its inhabitants in grave danger. Players will be able to choose between four distinct playable characters, each with their own abilities and personalities, as they hunt down the vampires with an arsenal of weapons. Redfall will reportedly feature an open-world city to explore, making it an immersive experience similar to Arkane's past games. Bethesda delayed the release of Redfall into 2023, but Arkane has recently begun detailing the upcoming co-op coffin-creeping shooter.

A Bethesda blog post confirms that Redfall will feature both solo single-player and cooperative multiplayer gameplay for players to enjoy. The biggest news is that the title will never see players joined by computer-controlled squadmates who follow them across the world. Instead, players who choose to play alone will simply be on their own against the vampire hordes. Meanwhile, playing co-op in Redfall will let two, three or four players team up to fight back against the bloodsucking beasts. Players will also be allowed to mix and match a squad's lineup however they like, meaning that multiple players can choose to control a single character without penalty.

The playable cast of characters in Xbox and Bethesda's new co-op shooter, Redfall.

The recent Redfall trailer showcased the four characters that players will be able to control during gameplay, with each possessing their own playstyle and suite of abilities. For example, the supernatural warrior Layla possesses telekinetic abilities that let her support her team and deal damage to her undead foes. Devinder, meanwhile, is a mechanically-gifted cryptozoologist who uses defensive gadgets like traps and sunlight weapons. The engineer Remi is partnered with a robot named Bribón, ensuring that players are never alone on the battlefield. Finally, Jacob is a supernatural sharpshooter who can cloak himself and call an ethereal raven.

While Redfall seems like a departure from Arkane Studios' typical single-player experiences, the vampire shooter will still let players travel alone. Computer-controlled allies will never bog down the experience, so those looking to mow down Draculas as a group will always be accompanied by other human players. This system will hopefully ensure that players can play Redfall however they please and create an optimal vampire-hunting experience.
