A new gameplay trailer for Arkane Studios' cooperative vampire shooter Redfall was shown during Xbox Games Showcase 2022. The upcoming first-person shooter will take players to a small Massachusetts town that has been overrun by hordes of bloodsucking undead. Back in May publisher Bethesda delayed the release of Redfall to 2023, and now Arkane Studios has given fans a brand-new look at the supernatural shooter.

Arkane Studios is most well-known for immersive role-playing games like Dishonored and Prey, but Redfall looks to have plenty in common with Left 4 Dead instead. The upcoming title will let players take control of four diverse heroes, each with their own unique skills, as they fight back against a hostile vampire takeover of the titular town. Players can either face the coffin-dwelling creatures solo or team up with other gamers to form a squad of undead hunters. Arkane Studios' previous release Deathloop saw the developer step foot into the realm of first-person shooters, and Doom developer id Software will help Redfall become an even more intense FPS.

An official gameplay reveal of Redfall, posted to YouTube by Xbox, sees a team of players take down vampires using cooperation and a swath of unique abilities. Like Arkane's previous games, Redfall promises to give players a detailed open-world environment to explore as they bring sunlight back to the titular town. Landmarks like a decrepit church and massive lighthouse promise to create interesting vampire encounters throughout the experience, with progression letting players improve their arsenal of weapons and powers. Each individual vampire looks to be appropriately powerful, but teamwork and light-based weapons can make short work of the bloodsucking monsters.

While Redfall may seem like a departure from Arkane Studios' previous works, the 2023 shooter has actually been in development for some time. Last year a former Arkane Studios developer's resume revealed that Redfall was in development when Prey: Mooncrash launched back in 2017. The fact that Redfall has long been intended as a follow-up to Prey counters the theory that Microsoft tasked the studio with making a first-person shooter when it bought Bethesda in 2021. The upcoming title's shared DNA with games like Dishonored and Prey, which also include detailed fictional settings and robust supernatural powers, is further evidenced by the new gameplay reveal trailer.

While Redfall may seem similar to Left 4 Dead, the Xbox Games Showcase gameplay trailer paints a much more colorful picture. The co-op vampire shooter introduces four playable characters, each with fascinating and unique supernatural powers, and lets them explore a rich and details blood-soaked world. Arkane Studios' next title looks to be a truly fast-paced experience that lets players live out their greatest Lost Boys fantasies.
