Over twenty years after its release, Freddy Got Fingered is unforgettable for its incredibly lascivious title. Regardless of the offensive name, Tom Green's 2001 surreal comedy was a critical and commercial dead, resulting in five Golden Raspberry Awards out of a whopping eight nominations.

A film's title is imperative to future success, as it creates memorability for the masses to formulate hype leading up to release. Unfortunately, some movies have greatly missed the mark with terrible titles, and users of Reddit have voted on the worst.

Gabourey Sidibe as Precious in Precious (2009)

Reddit user shmoove_cwiminal thinks that Precious: Based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire is the "worst title ever". Adapted from Sapphire's 1996 debut novel, the 2009 film shows the downfalls and resilience of an illiterate teenage mother named Precious (Gabourey Sidibe).

Such a long title is easily forgettable in its attempt to recognize its source material, leading to being more commonly dubbed as Precious. Regardless of the name, Precious ended up a wonderful success that garnered two Academy Award wins out of six nominations including a historical Best Adapted Screenplay win.

This Reddit user says that there's something about the title Home Fries "just makes me not want to watch it. The 1998 romantic dramedy centers on Dorian Luke Wilson who falls in love with his stepfather's pregnant mistress (Drew Barrymore).

As home fries are typically referred to as the breakfast potato dish, the restaurant setting of the foul had little to do with the overall plot. Therefore, a bad title greatly deterred moviegoers from watching the film. Despite promising performances, Home Fries fizzled at the box office, which could've been attributed to a lackluster title.

Reddit user nile-perch says To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar was “one of the very few movies I walked out on”. The 1995 road comedy film was ahead of its time for its depiction of drag queens in mainstream cinema.

In retrospect, the lengthy name not only has slight racial implications but is rather confusing in its unattractive title. However, To Wong Foo: Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar has gained a cult following and a newfound appreciation in recent years.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn)

Upon her spectacular on-screen debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad, a movie spin-off for daffy antihero Harley Quinn was inevitable. Although, the title of this spin-off was less than ideal. Reddit user childish_jalapenos thinks that Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of the One Harley Quinn) was a “terrible title and forced attempt at being quirky”.

Similar to Precious, Birds of Prey greatly suffered from an extended name, which greatly reduces the interest of the masses. The long title heavily detracts from what should have been a prominent introduction to vital DC Comics characters.

Get Out

A horror film that’s reminiscent of the works of Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski, the title of the 2017 film Get Out is somewhat cringeworthy. Reddit user Mentoman72 thinks that the name “is about as generic as it gets”.

While a stylish film, the title leaves little to no imagination for the overall premise. Considering such a fresh story, it was more deserving of a better title. Despite its snappy but dull name, Get Out was a critical and commercial success, resulting in an impressive directorial debut from comedian Jordan Peele, garnering him an Academy Award in 2018 for Best Original Screenplay.

Known for having an out-of-the-blue plot twist, Now You See Me greatly deserved its follow-up sequel but the title was a miss. This Reddit user says "the opportunity to name it Now You Don't was RIGHT THERE and they didn't do it".

On the contrary, the chance to have been able to play off the idiom "now you see me, now you don't" would have beautifully complemented the franchise's themes of mystique. The title of Now You See Me 2 lacks the punch of the predecessor film and creates confusion with the word "too".

Life As A House

A still from Life As A House (2001)

Reddit user quiettimes feels that "few people will ever know" that Life is a House is a great film because of its clunky title. The 2001 family drama revolves around a man Kevin Kline diagnosed with terminal cancer and reconnecting with his family by building a house.

As the Disney Channel Original Movie Smart House was released a few years prior, perhaps the association of houses being anthropomorphized could have led to confusion for the masses with Life as a House. Such a promising story would have highly benefited from a more poignant title instead of the romanticized final selection.

The Suicide Squad (2021)

When it comes to reboots, the title should hold some familiarity to entice the audience to view the new product. However, there wasn't much of a distinction with 2021's The Suicide Squad, a reboot of 2016's Suicide Squad. A deleted Redditor thinks the usage of the word "the" is "lazy titling".

Similar to Now You See Me 2, the title of The Suicide Squad does not match up to its predecessor. A new title could've been an excellent opportunity to not only create familiarity for older fans but also bring about something original and edgy to capture new fans.

Don't Worry Darling

Despite its accurate satirization of the rich, Don't Worry Darling is not a title that was embraced by the masses. Reddit user Maxi-Minus thinks that the film's name "makes no sense without the comma".

Not only does Don't Worry Darling suffer from a grammatical error, but the name doesn't reap the benefits upon revealing relevance within the film, making it an unfortunate title. Due to the immense scandals and controversy surrounding the film's cast and crew, a catchy but empty title such as Don't Worry Darling has been forever marred with much negativity.

Gigli

On the way to breaking her acting typecast, Jennifer Lopez had some unfortunate flops. Redditor watakushi says that just thinking of the 2003 film's name Gigli "makes me cringe, a stupid title for a terrible movie".

The title was reflective of the lead character, which not only lacked originality in its naming process but still has had scratching confusion over the correct pronunciation almost twenty years after its initial release. Combined with a horrible story that not even the film's real-life romance could save, Gigli is the worst name for a movie.
