On the Disney Channel, there has been a number of great original movies that have appeared over the 40 years that the channel has been running. These movies were often created for a holiday season, such as Halloween or Christmas, but then they became a regular staple of the channel.

Some movies are heartfelt, some are hilarious, and some had really poignant things to say. And thanks to Reddit, it's possible to see which films have managed to make a massive impact on viewers even years after their release, and which ones are considered the best in the massive catalog of DCOMs.

Susie Q (1996)

Susie Q features a girl from the 1950s who is killed on the way to a school dance and comes back as a ghost in the 1990s. It was pretty dark for a Disney Channel movie, as the main character died in the very first scene, but it has stood the test of time as a great film.

According to Reddit user MostlyALurkerBefore, "I loved that one! I think they stopped showing it because, thinking back, it dealt with pretty adult stuff. I had no idea what the grandpa's papers were when I was a kid." While the themes may have been deemed too adult, those themes were part of what made the film so good.

Halloweentown (1998)

The Disney Channel has many great Halloween episodes, so it's no wonder that it also has a great Halloween-themed movie. Halloweentown has become iconic, and according to one Redditor, the world that the film managed to build has made a massive impact on their life.

Mushroomer states, "The creativity of Halloweentown was what mattered. It created a fun adventure. I actually grew up in the town where they filmed the majority of it, and it blows my mind to this day how big of a deal people find that fact. People will travel for hours to come visit it during the month of October, just for a selfie with a recreation of the iconic pumpkin."

Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off (2003)

As stated by Reddit user AmericanGumbo, "My favorite DCOM is Eddie’s Million Dollar Cook-Off. I was so ecstatic about this film, that my mom recorded it on VHS for me, commercials and all. This movie is about a teen in the sexist world of high school baseball and home economics, whose cooking skills are as great as his skills on the field."

The film packed a great message about not conforming to gender roles and following your passions even when other people make fun of it. Disney Channel movies were always at their best when they had something meaningful to say, and this movie is a clear example of that.

The Color Of Friendship (2000)

The Color of Friendship is one of the most realistic Disney Channel movies, and Redditors appreciate it for that. As NotTheBomber says, it was "Definitely the most politically heavy of the DCOMs. I loved it, but it wasn't until I was older that I really understood the significance of Mahree and the Dellum family bonding."

The film managed to discuss the topic of race in a way that was easily understandable for children, and the main characters were both likable and realistic. It's a movie that still resonates with audiences today, despite the fact that it's over 20 years old.

Smart House (1999)

Disney Channel original movie Smart House.

Smart House is one of the goofiest Disney Channel movies, but fans still love it and consider it a classic. According to Reddit user xcarex, "Smart House was my fave because I had a massive crush on that kid, Ryan Merriman. Also, Katey Sagal was so cool in it. I remember it being pretty funny, too."

The film should also apparently have a remake, according to Mushroomer, "My first action as a multi-millionaire will be the purchase of the rights to Smart House, with which I will produce a gritty R-rated reboot. Seriously, a robot house traps the family inside and demands to mother them with the threat of lethal force. This concept needs to be revisited."

Brink (1998)

Brink is agreed to be the best movie by many Redditors. As Reddit user Nolongerlurkin declares, "I love Brink, I will still watch it to this day. I used to be really into aggressive inline, and when this movie came out it was the best thing I had ever seen. I begged my parents to take me to the skatepark every weekend."

Extreme skate sports were massive in the late 90s and early 2000s, so it's no wonder that this film caught on as much as it did. The characters were fun, the skating exciting, and it showed the importance of being passionate about something rather than simply doing it for monetary gain.

Johnny Tsunami (1999)

Johnny Tsunami, a film about a young surfer who trains to become an expert in snowboarding, is often compared with other Disney Channel sports movies, but this one is really special and manages to stand out. As SalamadrAttackForce asserts, "Johnny Tsunami [is the best Disney Channel film]. My plan is to one day get two kittens and name them Urchin and Sky."

Many Redditors love the movie for its fantastic acting, interesting location, and how it overall had such a positive message.

Cadet Kelly (2002)

As stated by Reddit user edisonog, "Cadet Kelly was a really fun movie, especially because Lizzy Mcguire [sic] was in it." A lot of Redditors agree with this sentiment, as Hilary Duff was considered to be the Princess of the Disney channel at the time, leading to many viewers watching everything that she was in and wanting to be just like her.

But that's not all this film has to offer. It also has a hilarious rivalry between the two main characters, a heartwarming discussion about step-parenting, and is a great example of a fish out of water story. It's definitely a Disney Channel movie that deserves a sequel.

The Cheetah Girls (2003)

The Cheetah Girls

The Cheetah Girls was an iconic movie. The characters were all fun, the message of female friendship was inspiring, and the outfits were instantly recognizable. As stated by eykitsa, "I was obsessed with The Cheetah Girls for a hot second. I got a Cheetah Girl doll and I wore those felt leopard print cat ears every day to school for a month."

Not only was the film great, but it also led to two fabulous sequels, and the songs that came from each movie were incredibly catchy and are still popular amongst listeners today.

Tru Confessions (2002)

As stated by Redditor edisonog, "Tru Confessions was another film that me and my sister loved watching. Shia Labeouf was really good in it. The scenes where he gets lost in the library and when his dad yells at him for playing with the watermelon always made me cry."

The film features the relationship between two siblings, one of which has a learning disability due to unknown reasons. Often films like this only focus on how hard this can be for the family, but this film showed how hard it can be for the person themselves, and Shia LaBeouf gives an incredible performance in this regard. It's ultimately a film with a lot of heart.
