While Red Tails was helmed by TV vet Anthony Hemingway (The Wire, Battlestar Galactica, CSI: NY), it's co-writer/producer George Lucas' name that's being used as the major selling point for the rousing true-story WWII action drama.
A new preview for Red Tails was unveiled at the 2011 SCREAM Awards - and, if the footage on display is any indication, the film will definitely be as technically-proficent and visually-impressive as anything previously produced by Lucas - or rather, that featured effects work by his Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).
Lucas is receiving story credit for Red Tails, but the actual screenplay was penned by John Ridley (Platinum, Third Watch) and The Boondocks comic strip/TV show creator Aaron McGruder. So those who long ago abandoned their faith in Lucas' ability to craft non-hokey dialogue or interesting characters need not panic, since he wasn't responsible for the bulk of writing on Red Tails.
Whether or not Red Tails will feel like an overly-conventional war drama is admittedly kind of hard to say, since trailers for films like this always focus foremost on the sort of inspiration speeches or snappy one-liners that tend to be hit-or-miss (in the actual movie, that is). One thing that should be obvious by now, though: this film will deliver the goods, as far as stunning aerial battle sequences and action spectacle goes.
Get a glimpse of just that in the new Red Tails trailer below:
Here is the official synopsis for Red Tails:
1944. As the war in Europe continues to take its toll on Allied forces, the Pentagon brass has no recourse but to consider unorthodox options – including the untried and untested African-American pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, they are given the ultimate chance to show their courage. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies to fight for their country – and the fate of the free world.
Between that inspirational storyline and the marvelous action set pieces (ex. the battleship/train bombings) teased from Red Tails so far, there's good reason to think this movie could be pretty entertaining. That's to say nothing of the overall solid cast, which includes Terence Howard (Iron Man), Golden-Globe Nominee Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire), Nate Parker (The Great Debaters), Tristan Wilds (The Wire), Kevin Phillips (Notorious), Elijah Kelley (Hairspray), Marcus T. Paulk (Moesha), Michael B Jordan (Friday Night Lights), and hip-hop artist Cliff “Method Man” Smith - among others.
Look for Red Tails to soar into theaters around the U.S. on January 20th, 2012.
