Red Sparrow features one of the most stacked casts in recent years, with a host of recognizable faces supporting Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton on their R-rated spy adventure. But where have you seen them all before?

Directed by Francis Lawrence, with a screenplay from Justin Haythe, Red Sparrow has long courted conversation due to its similarities to Marvel's Black Widow, although what will really get people talking is the intensity of its sexually charged, violent story. Jennifer Lawrence is Dominika Egorova

You'll certainly recognize Lawrence, who plays the central character, Dominika. The highest paid actress for both 2015 and 2016, Lawrence's movies have grossed more than $5.5 billion worldwide. X-Men, The Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle, are just a few of the movies and franchises that she's been a part of.

Despite her recent movies garnering mixed reviews (including Passengers and mother!), Lawrence's performances are most often highly praised. In Red Sparrow, Lawrence's plays a ballerina-turned-Russian spy who must seduce CIA officer Nate Nash - only to seemingly fall for him.

Joel Edgerton is Nathaniel 'Nate' Nash

Joel Edgerton is an Australian actor with a variety of roles to his name. Many will recognize him as the young Owen Lars from the Star Wars prequels, but more recently he's been in the likes of Baz Luhrmann's The Great GatsbyBlack Mass, and Exodus: Gods and Kings. He also wrote, directed, produced and starred in bullying chiller The Gift. In Red Sparrow, his character is an American CIA officer who falls for - or tries to manipulate - Dominika.

Jeremy Irons is General Vladimir Andreievich Korchnoi

Irons has a long, distinguished and varied career both on stage and screen (big and small) and has received vast critical acclaim for many roles. In theater, he's starred in many Shakespeare plays such as Macbeth and Richard II and he won a Tony for Best Actor for his role in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing.

On screen, his first major role in The French Lieutenant's Woman won him a BAFTA, and he followed that up with an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1990 for Reversal of Fortune. He will always be known to millions as the voice of Scar in The Lion King, and since 2016 he has played the role of Alfred Pennyworth in the DCEU.

Matthias Schoenaerts is Ivan Dimitrevich Egorov

Schoenaerts is a Belgian actor and film producer who has been in the spotlight since he was 13. He's best known for his roles as Fillip in Loft, Jacky in Bullhead, and Ali in Rust and Bone. He also played Gabriel in Far From the Madding Crowd, opposite Carey Mulligan, and Hans Axgil in The Danish Girl, which starred Eddie Redmayne and won Alicia Vikander her Oscar. In Red Sparrow, he plays Dominika's Uncle, who forces her to undergo spy training at the Sparrow school.

Charlotte Rampling is Matron

Rampling has been a prominent actress since the 60s, working in both mainstream film and TV as well as European Arthouse films in English, French and Italian. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the movie 45 Years, and in the same year starred in acclaimed British TV dramas Broadchurch and London Spy. In Red Sparrow, Rampling is the Headmistress of the spy school that Dominika attends.

Mary-Louise Parker is Senator Stephanie Boucher - The turncoat SWAN is played by the Emmy-award winning Parker, who starred in Angels in America and Weeds.

Joely Richardson is Nina Egorova - Dominika's mother is played by Richardson, best known for her role in Nip/Tuck, as well as roles in period shows like Lady Chatterley's Lover and The Tudors.

Ciaran Hinds is Colonel Alexei Ivanovich Zyuganov - The head of Russian intelligence is played by the man behind Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones and Aberforth Dumbledore in Harry Potter, who's also appeared in The Woman in Black and Silence (as well as Justice League villain Steppenwolf).

Bill Camp is Marty Gable - Nate's CIA superior is played by prominent character actor Bill Camp. He'll probably be best recognized from his key role in The Night Of, and has also be seen in Birdman, 12 Years A Slave, Jason BourneThe Killing of a Sacred Deer and much, much more.

Hugh Quarshie is Simon Benford - Nate and Gable's superior is played by Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace's Quarshie, who has also been seen prominently in British dramas like Doctor Who and Holby City.

Sakina Jaffrey is Trish Forsyth - The other CIA agent is played by TV mainstay Jaffrey, who is probably best known for House of CardsTimeless and Third Watch.
