Few characters have come to define the genre of sword and sorcery like Red Sonja. The character's iconic red hair and chainmail bikini have been the basis for innumerable knock-offs and look a likes, but at the end of the day, there's only one Red Sonja, and her fans have reason to be excited. The Boys publisher Dynamite Comics is bringing the iconic warrior back with the release of The Invincible Red Sonja.

Coming from the duo of Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, Invincible Red Sonja will be a return to form for the character. According to Dynamite, "This new journey for the fiery-haired heroine is chock-full of pirates, mermaids, princesses, political intrigue and much more. It's a can't-miss celebration of sword and sorcery action," meaning that fans of classic adventure fantasy are in for a treat. In the exclusive preview pages provided by Dynamite, it's clear that Sonja will encounter some trouble at sea involving a troublesome djinn and some murderous mermaids.

The character has been one of Dynamite's most consistent characters. Originally created in 1973 as a companion to Conan the Barbarian, Sonja quickly gained attention for her striking design and strong personality. The character proved to be such a hit that she even received a film adaptation co-starring, Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1985. Though initially popular, she would go mostly unused until Dynamite started publishing a series starring her in 2005. Since then, Sonja has seen a whole host of talented creators, such as award-winning writer Gail Simone, help bring the character to modern readers. The character made headlines not long ago for a plotline that revealed that she was bisexual, though her sexuality has varied from writer to writer.

If any team can live up to the character's pedigree though, it's the duo of Conner and Palmiotti. The married couple is best known for their work with DC characters such as Power Girl and Harley Quinn. Notably, their interpretation of Harley served as partial inspiration for the critically-acclaimed Harley Quinn T.V. show. They expressed enthusiasm for the project, with Conner stating, "I have loved Red Sonja since I was about 12 years old. I wanted to grow up to be her at one point, but it's just not the Hyborian Age anymore. Which I guess is a good thing." Conner and Palmiotti will be accompanied by a wide variety of cover artists who will each bring their own unique flair to the world of Red Sonja.

Given the creative team's pedigree and the strength of the preview pages, it's safe for fans of Red Sonja to assume that the red-haired warrior is in good hands. Look for The Invincible Red Sonja #1 when it released from Dynamite Comics in May 2021.
