'Red 2' Snags 'Galaxy Quest' Helmer As Director

Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) is in final negotiations to direct the 'Red' sequel, which should see stars like Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren reprise their roles as retired special ops agents.

Seeing how Summit is sticking to a planned Summer 2013 release date for Red 2, it's long been known that Red director Robert Schwentke wouldn't be returning for the sequel - as he'll be busy with post-production on R.I.P.D. when production on the new installment about (sorta) retired special ops agents gets underway. Hence, the search for Schwentke's replacement has been officially ongoing for some six months now.

A helmer has finally been found in the form of Dean Parisot, who is an Oscar-winner for his 1987 short film "The Appointments of Dennis Jennings" - but is best known for directing comedies like Fun with Dick and Jane and especially Galaxy Quest (a beloved "unofficial" riff on Star Trek).

Not every movie that features Parisot at the helm has proven to be a home run, but he is a solid director who knows how to aptly combine laughs with action (a must for the Red sequel). Not to mention, Parisot has been stretching his filmmaking muscles outside the realm of pure comedy in recent years, by directing episodes of dramatic TV series such as The Good Wife and Justified. That also helps explain why he beat out several other filmmakers for the directing gig on the second Red installment (according to Heat Vision).

Red 2 should see Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren all reprise their original roles as "retired and extremely dangerous" agents who get called back into action. Side players like Mary-Louise Parker, Karl Urban, and Brian Cox could also be returning, but that depends entirely on the original script that Red writing duo Erich and Jon Hoeber (who also penned the impending Battleship adaptation) cook up.

On that note - while the original Red movie is a fun bit of popcorn entertainment which also demonstrates that you don't need young stars or run-and-gun-style filmmaking to produce a fun action movie, there's no guarantee that lightning will strike twice. Still, here's to hoping that Red 2 proves to be a worthy followup.

Red 2 is tentatively slated for a U.S. theatrical release on August 2nd, 2013.
