Last year Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke signed on to direct a new Gothic version of the classic children's tale Little Red Riding Hood. The working title for the film is actually The Girl with the Red Riding Hood but working titles almost always change during production, so something a little more familiar and shorter may actually be used come release time.
Hardwicke will be directing from a David Johnson script (Clash of the Titans 2) who also penned the sort of creepy thriller Orphan last year. I won't spoil Orphan for you but there is somewhat of a big surprise at the end so I'm betting Johnson will do something similar for this film and the wolf will take off his suit revealing that it's grandma underneath.
Our good friend over at Accidental Sexiness was able to procure some behind the scenes images from Little Red Riding Hood and she was kind enough to share them with us. We've posted some good ones below but head over to HERE to see the entire batch.
IMDB describes Little Red Riding Hood as "Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family's displeasure." It stars the beautiful Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer's Body) as the titular girl with a basket, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight) as Father Soloman, Michael Shanks (Stargate: SG-1) as Adrien Lazar, Lukas Haas (Inception) as Father August with Virginia Madsen (The Astronaut Farmer), Julie Christie (Troy), and Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica) rounding out this fine cast.
I keep wondering if this is going to another dark re-imagining from Hollywood like Brett Ratner's Snow White or the misstep that was The Brothers Grimm? It's hard to get a good read on the direction of the film from just the wardrobe, but if we go by the IMDB genre it would seem that Hardwicke and company are shooting for a drama/thriller and I'm OK with that.
I'm going to be happy to have Michael Shanks back at work doing something non-Stargate related and non-ridiculous-outfit related (Hawkman from Smallville). I watched him in this eyerolling movie called Swarm a few years back and OY! was it bad - even for a SyFy original-type film.
You can see how big grandma's teeth are in The Girl with the Red Riding Hood (Little Red Riding Hood) on April 22nd, 2011.
