Red Notice is already proving to be a huge success for Netflix, earning the biggest opening day for any film on the service. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, Red Notice debuted on Netflix this weekend after rolling out in select theaters the week before. It boasts an incredibly star-studded cast led by Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. A globe-trotting adventure made during COVID, Red Notice follows FBI profiler John Hartley (Johnson) as he teams up with wily art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) to track down an even more notorious thief (Gadot).

Though it earned mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, Red Notice has been embraced by fans, notching a 92% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. In the lead-up to its release, Red Notice was hyped by its stars and producers as one of the biggest - if not the biggest - original movie Netflix has ever made. This led to some high expectations when it came to its performance. While Red Notice didn't exactly break the box office in its limited theatrical run, its streaming numbers look to be much healthier.

On Saturday, both Reynolds and Johnson took to social media to reveal Red Notice scored the biggest opening day for any movie in Netflix history. Reynolds tweeted out his congratulations to the creative team and quipped that he "Congrats to this whole team! Can’t wait for Red Notice (Taylor’s Version)." Meanwhile, Johnson posted a video sharing his amazement at the achievement and thanking fans for making it happen. You can see both posts down below.

This is bound to be a huge relief for Netflix, seeing as Red Notice had a pretty large budget. Only time will tell where the movie ranks among the streamer's top 10 most-watched movies, but it does feel like it could carve out its own spot on the list. Right now, the Chris Hemsworth-starring Extraction remains the biggest Netflix movie of all time, but perhaps Red Notice will finally be the one to unseat it. Red Notice's record only accounts for one day, but as more subscribers seek it out in the coming weeks, it could become a major hit.

It's perhaps still too early to fully determine if Red Notice is a complete success, but this could very well lead to the creation of a sequel. The ending of Red Notice leaves the door wide open for a follow-up, and if the movie continues to find an audience, it stands to reason that Netflix will want to build upon it. The streamer has gradually become more interested in creating its own film franchises, and Red Notice could be another solid addition to its growing library. Should a sequel get the greenlight, then fans will really know if this starry caper is a triumph.
