A new image arrives for Netflix's Red Notice featuring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot teaming up for the action-adventure. The film stars Johnson as the FBI's top profiler in the world of art crime as he crosses paths with two rival criminals, Gadot's world-best art thief and Reynolds' world-best con-artist, amidst a daring heist. Red Notice hails from writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber, with whom Johnson previously collaborated with for the 2016 action comedy Central Intelligence and the 2018 thriller Skyscraper.
Development on Red Notice first began in early 2018 ahead of Skyscraper's release when Johnson and Thurber partnered once again for a then-untitled action comedy that sparked a bidding war across all major studios. Universal and Legendary Pictures, who worked with the duo on the 2018 thriller, would land the rights a day after the project was announced and Gadot and Reynolds signed on shortly thereafter, though the project would shift to Netflix with the latter's attachment due to Universal's reported issue with production differences with Thurber. Production would initially begin in early 2020 though would be delayed indefinitely until September of last year and would finally wrap on November 18.
With just over two months remaining until the film's release, Empire has unveiled a new image for Red Notice. The photo sees stars Reynolds, Johnson and Gadot standing alongside one another and facing an unknown sight, with Johnson's FBI profiler the only one appearing tense in the moment. Though audiences may be more eager to see a trailer finally premiere for the film, any new reveal of Red Notice comes as an exciting tease of what can be expected from the action-adventure. The biggest draw is certainly the pairing of Johnson, Reynolds and Gadot together for a project that sounds right up all of their alleys, blending big-budget action with odd couple comedy, the former of whom previously displayed together in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. The new image may not offer much in the way of insight for the film's plot, but it does give a nice little peek into the differences in the three characters' personalities, with Johnson carrying the tense weight of a law enforcement agent while Reynolds and Gadot display the sense of calm expected from world-class criminals.
Red Notice comes as a continuation of a trend for Netflix that began as far back as 2017's Bright as the streaming platform spends big money on films with A-list talent to potentially build a franchise on. This effort has seen a very mixed bag of projects for Netflix, with hits such as Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead and the Chris Hemsworth-led Extraction getting follow-ups while duds such as Michael Bay's 6 Underground led to a cancellation of franchise plans. Only time will tell which side of the line Red Notice, Netflix's biggest film to date with an estimated budget of $160-200 million, falls on when it arrives on November 12.
