The Dwayne Johnson action film Red Notice is set to gross lower than $1 million in the box office this weekend. The Netflix film, which also stars Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, was helmed by director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who previously collaborated with The Rock on Central Intelligence and Skyscraper. Johnson stars as FBI profiler John Hartley who recruits Reynolds' art thief Nolan Booth to help him hunt down a rival thief, Gadot's Sarah Black, AKA The Bishop. The pair hope to prevent her from stealing the valuable Cleopatra eggs.

The film's distribution scheme is rather unusual for a Netflix film. The project is reportedly the most expensive that Netflix has put out at a budget of $200 million. The reason for this is that Red Notice was originally intended to be produced by Universal before the streaming service acquired it. Perhaps because of this giant price tag, Netflix gave the film a limited release this weekend before its streaming premiere on November 12, an approach they typically only give to their Oscar contenders like Roma or Mank.

Per DeadlineRed Notice's one-week theatrical run is not proving to be a big moneymaker for the service. Although Netflix hasn't yet announced their box office numbers, which is highly unusual for any theatrical release, the film will reportedly earn under $1 million this weekend. Its prospects for its full run of one week are also looking rather dismal.

It's important to note that Red Notice's release was limited, restricted to only 750 theaters compared to Eternals' 4,090 theaters, which also released this week. Eternals slightly underperformed this weekend by Marvel standards, though the film will still nab the #1 slot and likely draw action-hungry audiences away from Red Notice in the process. Likewise, Eternals will be exclusively in theaters for quite some time. Red Notice, with its splashy action and all-star cast, will likely perform considerably better next week when it premieres on streaming.

Red Notice may be splitting reviewers (in fact it has now dipped into rotten territory at 44% on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of the next burst of reviews), but its nostalgic action mayhem will likely prove critic-proof. Both Johnson and Reynolds have films in the top 10 of the year with Jungle Cruise and Free Guy respectively, and Gadot has had streaming success with both Wonder Woman 1984 and Zack Snyder's Justice League within the last year. Given their prominence and success even mid-pandemic, their chances at dominating Netflix viewership are still looking high.
