An online leak has suggested that a remake of Red Dead Redemption is in the works for the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The game was met with near-universal acclaim and currently stands as the fifth-highest rated PS3 game and seventh-highest rated Xbox 360 game of all time. Despite being the second game in the Red Dead series, it achieved far more acclaim than its predecessor, Red Dead Revolver, and is widely considered the real start of the series. Some argue it's even better than Red Dead Redemption 2, the current-gen prequel that released in 2018.

The Red Dead Redemption games are some of the medium's most widely beloved. Their solid action gameplay, dedication to realism, and deep, thoughtful stories all worked to solidify their places in the canon of must-play titles. Red Dead Redemption 2, in particular, took the world by storm when it released two years ago, becoming one of the best-selling games ever and an oft-cited example of video games as an art form. But, as universally adored as Red Dead Redemption 2 is, its predecessor has fallen by the wayside a bit. Despite its immense popularity upon release last generation, the consoles it's on are now effectively obsolete. Worse, rumors that the original Red Dead Redemption would get a PC port after the success of its console launch never came to pass, making the game's age all the more noticeable.

However, new rumors are cropping up that suggest that Red Dead Redemption is getting another chance in the limelight. An anonymous 4chan leak, as reported on by CCN, claims Rockstar is currently remaking the game entirely for release on the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X. The leak claims that the game is getting a complete engine overhaul for enhanced performance on the new consoles, and that the developers are also adding brand new side mission content and gameplay features from Red Dead Redemption 2. According to the leak, this project will be announced soon, and slated for a release early next year.

Horse Wrangling in Red Dead Redemption

If true, the time is certainly right for a re-release. Fans are clamoring for more of the realistic western setting and style action the series delivers, especially since Red Dead Redemption 2 has been noticeably lacking in any single-player DLC to improve its longevity beyond Red Dead Online. Since Red Dead Redemption 2 is really a prequel, new fans can experience the series in sequence by picking up the remake and continuing the story from where RDR2 left off. It would also be a good way to keep Rockstar fans satisfied while development on Grand Theft Auto 6 continues, since publisher Take-Two Interactive has hinted that that hotly anticipated title is still considerably far away.

Like all leaks - especially ones from sources like 4chan - this rumor should be taken very, very lightly. Nothing has been said or implied by Rockstar at the time of this writing to suggest that the remake is actually a reality. Still, it's an exciting prospect to consider, and it certainly seems like a good move on the developer's part. Only time will tell what Rockstar's plans for the future are, but it seems like there's at least a small possibility that these plans could include a truly phenomenal blast from the past in Red Dead Redemption on the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X.
