When Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018, it was critically praised and adored by most fans. The open world game also sold exceedingly well, and the introduction of Red Dead Online the following year (along with a PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2) kept people playing. Although Rockstar Games hasn't officially announced Red Dead Redemption 3 yet, there's a very good chance a third installment will happen.

Red Dead Redemption 2 released to nearly perfect critical scores in 2018. The game was equally loved by players, with many considering it the game of the decade. However, critical reception doesn't necessarily mean a game will get a sequel - that usually depends on sales. But Red Dead Redemption 2 also has incredible sales numbers, which means a follow-up is almost certain.

Even now, Red Dead Redemption 2 has astounding sales figures. It was one of the best-selling games of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One era. Its opening weekend sales shattered records, selling upwards of $725 million in the first three days. Due to its rousing success, it might seem obvious that Red Dead Redemption 3 is just a matter of time. However, there's an even better reason fans should prepare for a new entry eventually.

When Red Dead Redemption 3 Might Release

Dan Houser, who directed Red Dead Redemption 2, is also the co-founder of Rockstar Games alongside his brother Sam. Back in 2018, in an interview with Vulture, Dan Houser said they'd be up for a Red Dead Redemption 3 if the second one sold well. They also said the company wanted to concentrate on getting Red Dead Online out at the time. Now that Red Dead Online has released, it means the door for Red Dead Redemption 3 is wide open.

The biggest question is when RDR3 might release. Considering how long it's been between Grand Theft Auto entries, it may be a long time before a third Red Dead Redemption installment arrives. Since Rockstar's GTA 6 hasn't even been officially announced yet, a Red Dead Redemption 3 announcement probably won't happen until even later. That could mean fans are years - or even a decade - away from RDR3 right now.

Despite it likely being years away, Red Dead Redemption 3 is almost certainly going to happen at some point. Red Dead Redemption 2 is just too successful and adored to go without a follow-up. It's also great to know that Dan Houser and Rockstar Games were already thinking of a third entry back in 2018. Despite Dan Houser leaving Rockstar earlier this year, Sam Houser is still president of the company. Fans eager for a RDR2 sequel may have to wait a while longer for an official announcement, but the game is most likely happening.
