A fan recently made an interesting suggestion for a hypothetical Red Dead Redemption 3 that would alternate the game’s perspective between three characters - just like Grand Theft Auto 5. Each installment of the Red Dead Redemption series has centered around a different member of the outlaw Van der Linde gang, with 2010’s Red Dead Redemption following John Marston as he hunts down his former allies in exchange for his family’s safe return and 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 turning back the clock to focus on Arthur Morgan as he flees from the law and other enemies during the decline of the Old West.

Both of the existing Red Dead Redemption titles are among the highest-selling and most critically acclaimed video games in recent memory, and fans are naturally wondering what Rockstar could have in store for them in a third entry in the open-world western series. Much of this speculation revolves around Red Dead Redemption 3’s setting and narrative, as many have noted that continuing the story after the events of Red Dead Redemption 2 could prove to be a problem, since that particular game was set near the end of the Old West era. Others have also pitched their ideal locations for Red Dead Redemption 3, which would see players travel across the Oregon Trail or the western United States Coast during the California Gold Rush - both of which would be fitting settings for the cowboy-centric Red Dead Redemption series to explore.

The question of who would be doing the exploring in Red Dead Redemption 3 remains another point of discussion among fans, but Reddit user Double-Back-B recently posted a novel answer on the Red Dead Redemption subreddit earlier this week. They suggest that Red Dead Redemption 3 could have multiple protagonists like Grand Theft Auto V did, with players alternating between younger versions of Hosea, Arthur, and their old gang leader Dutch van der Linde similarly to GTA V’s playable trinity of Franklin Clinton, Michael DeSanta and Trevor Philips. Some other users in the comments section of Double-Back-B’s post agree that this would be an interesting way to continue telling the story of the Van der Linde gang and provide different gameplay styles for each character, but others feel that having multiple protagonists would not fit the Red Dead Redemption games as well as it does for Grand Theft Auto.

Red Dead Redemption 3 Could Have Multiple Playable Characters

This discussion will likely continue for some time, as Rockstar has given no indication that Red Dead Redemption 3 is in development or even planned at this time. On the contrary, the mega-studio appears to be focusing its efforts on the recently announced and long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6, which is said to be one of the reasons for Rockstar discontinuing Red Dead Online last month. Still, plenty of fans wish to jump back into Rockstar’s take on the Old West in Red Dead Redemption 3, and even John Marston VA Rob Wiethoff stated that he would be willing to return for a follow-up last year.

John Marston could very well be a playable character once again in Red Dead Redemption 3, if Rockstar decides to implement multiple protagonists like it did for the equally monumental Grand Theft Auto 5. Only time will tell what Red Dead Redemption 3 will bring in terms of its story and main character though, as it doesn’t seem like the much-speculated sequel is a priority for Rockstar at the moment.
