A noteworthy gaming news leaker is now claiming that Red Dead Redemption 2 might be getting an upgrade for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in the near future. Rockstar Games’ most recent open-world wild west action title serves as a prequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption, telling the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan as he struggles to survive in the rugged landscape of the American South in the late 1800s. Red Dead Redemption 2 broke several records when it was first released in 2019.

With the advent of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles, sandbox games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Rockstar’s own Grand Theft Auto 5 have seen new life in the form of visually impressive updates that enhanced the graphics of these already impressive titles and added new technical features like the PS5's Haptic Feedback support. Naturally, many RDR 2 fans have wondered if it will be the next last-gen triple-A title to make the jump to current systems, but Rockstar has remained silent on whether or not it has plans for an upgrade for its blockbuster cowboy simulator - and many insiders are doubtful that it will see a release anytime this year even if it is in the cards.

Now, a reliable gaming new leaker by the handle of AccountNgt was recently asked about a potential PS5/Xbox Series update for Red Dead Redemption 2 on Twitter, to which they responded that “it’s coming.” They had no further information to give on the subject, even when asked when they think it will be released, but they seem certain that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be upgraded for current systems at some point in the future. AccountNgt has made correct predictions about several other PS5 games like Hogwarts Legacy and Star Wars Eclipse, as well as big developments like Sony’s purchase of former Halo and Destiny 2 developer Bungie earlier this year – adding credence to the theory that a current-gen RDR2 update is on the way. In fact, they previously predicted that Red Dead Redemption 2 would at least be coming to the PS5 back in January, but they have since deleted the tweets making this claim.

Even three years after Red Dead Redemption 2’s much-lauded release on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, players are still roaming Rockstar's virtual frontier - either by replaying Arthur's gripping single-player campaign or logging on to tame the old west with friends in Red Dead Online. Some fans are already beginning to speculate on a possible third game in the Red Dead Redemption series, but others admit that a Red Dead Redemption 3 would be difficult due to the previous two entries being set at the tail end of the Wild West era. Even without that potential narrative obstacle, it might be a very long time before a third Red Dead Redemption title is even announced much less released, due to Rockstar’s current focus on the equally anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.

A PS5/Xbox Series X update of Red Dead Redemption 2 could help alleviate this long wait for another chapter in the decade-spanning story of RDR2's Van der Linde gang by making the already engaging world that Rocksteady crafted even more immersive with new graphics and features. As credible as AccountNgt has proven to be in the past, however, there is still no official word that Rockstar is planning to bring Red Dead Redemption 2 into the current console generation.
