The developers at Rockstar have done a masterful job, giving fans a variety of intimidating opponents to deal with in Red Dead Redemption 2. Far from your typical Western, Red Dead Redemption 2 crosses over into multiple genres. While you still encounter your run-of-the-mill criminal, rogue, or vagabond,  you can also often run into many unexpected foes.

Supernatural elements sometimes creep into the game. If you do some deep exploration, you might likely run into ghosts, vampires, witches, or people who appear to be possessed. Other times, foes are not supernatural at all, and, instead, they might be severely twisted people who stretch the limits of evil.

Such foes can also come out of nowhere. Some people who appear to be welcoming might actually have their own hidden nefarious schemes. That upstanding citizen at the general store might have a secret in his basement. Also, you never know who — or what — you're going to run into in the woods or the swamps at night.

Surprise or hidden bosses can emerge from anywhere at any time, and although some are connected with side missions, others can be found "in the wild" and are not really connected to any particular storyline. Almost all of them have some kind reward, though sometimes the "win" is just the experience of finding them at all.

Need To Find: Hermit Boss

Some folks just want to be left alone, and can we blame them? There are all kinds of weird characters running around the world of Red Dead Redemption 2. Sketchy folk, criminals, dangerous maverick types— and those all describe your character, Arthur.

So it shouldn't be any surprise that when you trespass on someone else's property, they might greet you with a rally of shotgun fire. It's how they say hello in these parts. You can find this particular trigger-happy hermit in Manito Glade, north of Annesburg. Once you dispatch of him, make sure to loot him for a rare shotgun and a piece of a treasure map. Also, make sure to take cover. He's a pretty good shot.

Isn't Worth It: Brother And Sister

The introduction to this brother and sister pair seems innocent enough at first. The brother greets you at the doorway, excited to have a visitor, and offers you a place at the table for food and drink. The sister flirts with you unapologetically. However, it gets weirder from here.

It seems like the brother and sister are just a little too close to each other. If that's not creepy enough, they seem to insist that you drink from the bottle. If you do, watch out, you're going to get poisoned. You'll black out and find yourself robbed penniless, and far from the cabin. Luckily you can backtrack and enact sweet revenge on the creepy couple and search the house to get all your stuff back. However, it wasn't really worth going in there in the first place.

Need to find: Vampire

Vampires are supposedly immortal, so it shouldn't be surprising to run into one no matter what time period you land in. However, it is always interesting when the Old West crosses over with other genres, like science fiction, or in this case, horror.

Finding the vampire in Red Dead Redemption 2 is a bit tricky. He's somewhere in St. Denis, and a good place to start is by visiting the Butcher's near the docks. You'll find a poetic clue written on a wall, which will, in turn, lead you to other clues, which eventually lead to the vampire. You'll get an ornate dagger for your trouble. He'll perish on the first shot, though, so if you want to hear what he has to say you must be patient.

Isn't worth it: The Gambler

Winning a ton of money in a mini-game can be great, but there's never a guarantee that you're going to win. You are able to activate a poker game in which you can go head to head against other gamblers. Sometimes you'll win, but sometimes you won't. If you play your cards right, you can walk away with a respectable little pile of money.

However, they don't call it gambling for nothing. You can also conceivably lose all of the money that it's taken you so long to grind and earn, so do be careful. There are multiple areas where you can play poker in the game. The poker table pictured above can be found in a Salon at St. Denis, where you can play with bigger stakes.

Need to find: Psychopath

There have always been serial mad-men like Ted Bundy who take multiple victims and do unspeakable things to them. Explore deep enough into the game, and you'll run into this psychopath, who wants to make you his latest art piece in his hidden lair. You can see some of his human dismantling tools on the wall, as well as an old camera to document his projects. A quick look around and you will also discover the corpses of his other victims.

If you are quick on the draw, you'll be able to bring him to the sherrif for a reward. Like the vampire, he can only be found by tracking down a series of clues, beginning with a body part that can be found south of the Wallace Train Station, on the road towards the Dakota river.

Isn't worth it: Creepy Stalker

It gets awfully lonely out there on the prairies of the Old West. Some people take comfort in carrying around intimate photos and paintings. This is a highly delicate way of saying that there are creeps everywhere, even in Red Dead Redemption 2.

This man takes great pride in his collection of such photos and paintings, and displays it openly for all to see. If you stop and chat, he's excited to talk about a woman "he has his eye on." The more you converse, the more you'll realize that he's a huge creep. If you want, you can dispatch of him quickly and loot his belongings. He doesn't have much, though, so unless you're just curious about meeting him, it's not really worth the effort.

Need to find: The Witch

There are ghosts, vampires, and even witches to contend with in Red Dead Redemption 2. In fact, there are two witches in the game.

This particular witch is another hermit who considers anything within her visual range a threat. If you get too close, she'll sic her dogs on you, which you'll have to fight offs. Thankfully, instead of shooting lightning bolts or fireballs at you, she relies on an old-fashioned non-magical shotgun. After you take care of her, you can loot her place and earn an extra piece of the map. You can find her at the northwestern edge of the map, west of the Grizzlies.

Isn't worth it: Crazy Kidnapper

Arthur has a knack for running into the most questionable characters on his journey, most likely because he is such a questionable character himself. Sometimes trouble just happens to find him.

In one case, you can find a person who has been abducted desperately crying for help from a locked basement window of a gunsmith's shop. This poor victim is a man who is forced to wear a boy's sailor outfit. He is chained to the bed in the basement. You can raid the basement, unchain the man, and confront the gunsmith about his "hobby." You'll be able to loot around $25 from the cash register for your troubles. Since it isn't much of an award, it isn't worth it for most players.

Need to find: Joshua Brown

If you feel like having an adventure and adding more coins to your pocket, you can take a bounty hunting mission from the sherrif. After you complete the mission "Good, Honest, Snake Oil", you'll unlock the bounty hunting option. However, the bigger the bounty, the harder the target.

One of the individuals you can find is Joshua Brown, who is located in an abandoned mine northwest of Strawberry. You'll find the remains of his campfire first, which will trigger a cutscene, where he explains that there's only one way out of the mine, and it's through him. Joshua has to be taken in alive in order for you to collect the bounty, so when it comes to drawing weapons, shoot for his legs and then hogtie him. The bounty is around $40.

Isn't worth it: The Secret Moonshiner

People who make moonshine are often seen as criminals, but we can hardly blame them. Because of this, it feels kind of weird to enact "justice" on a moonshiner by robbing him. With Arthur, we suppose there's no honor among thieves, but it still just doesn't feel quite right — especially when the moonshiner seems to be an otherwise decent person.

However, if you choose to go forward with it, you can find the moonshiner's secret basement in Strawberry, at the bottom of Cooper's General Store. If you poke around underneath the porch, you'll find a window that you can peek into, where you'll find the moonshine. This will unlock the ability to rob $50 from the store by terrorizing the owner into unlocking the basement. However, is that really necessary?

Need to find: The Giant Alligator

In this mission, one of your unlucky compatriots will try to get your boat unstuck from a tree stump in the shallow waters of the swamp. However, he is soon bitten by an alligator. Soon, your entire party begins to shoot into the water.

Your companion survives, and if you keep your shooting sharp, you can slay the aligator. You'll need to stay focused and watch for him in the water. This is part of a larger mission to get revenge on Angelo Bronte for leading Dutch and company into a trap. By the title of the mission ("Revenge is a Dish Best Served Eaten"), you can tell that it probably won't to end well for Angelo.

Isn't worth it: The Sobbing Woman and Zombies

There a have been some rumors that Rockstar might have a zombie-themed DLC in the works for Red Dead Redemption 2, but so far nothing has been confirmed. One of the strongest hints that fans have found is the female zombie (or ghost?) and her fellow zombie compatriots, who can be found in the game.

If you wander the Bluewater Marsh at night and listen for a wailing woman, you can find this poor soul in a dirty white dress crying on her knees. If you try to console her, she slashes at you with a knife and runs off while her zombie minions attack you from all sides. Some fans think this a reference to La Llorona, a ghost in the folklore of Mexico that laments the loss of her children.

Need to find: Flaco Hernandez

You can encounter Flaco Hernandez in the side-mission "The Noblest of Men and a Woman". Flaco has had quite the criminal career, so it's obvious why he is wanted in eight states. As a result of this, he has become somewhat infamous. In fact, one author wants to include him in a book that he's writing, in which he also talks about another man named Jim "Boy" Calloway.

When you find Flaco at a snowy camp in Grizzlies West, you must cautiously approach him for just an interview and mention that are not trying to look for trouble. Unfortunately, Hernandez is not in much of conversational mood and soon his revolver is out. You'll be forced into a duel. If you survive, you'll be rewarded with Flaco's revolver, which is one of the best guns in the game.

Isn't worth it: The Foreman

You can find this "boss" as part of the optional mission called "Do Not Seek Absolution I." This is one of the missions that you can undertake to ostensibly do a good deed. During this mission, you will encounter Edith Downes, who Arthur has an unfortunate past with. He beat her husband to collect a debt, and after the husband passed away, later collected the debt from Edith. She is now a woman of the night, working near the coal mines.

You find out that her son has become the slave of the foreman, Mr. Dockery. You can fight Mr. Dockery in order to set the boy free. After you do, you can give him $35 and tell him to go find his mom. Though Arthur feels bad for what he put Edith's family through, it's still unfortunate that you have to lose money.

Need to find: The Legendary Bullgator

The Legendary Bullgator mission is part of the legendary hunting side missions. There are multiple legendary animals that you can ttrack down and hunt, each with its own unique reward. Some of the animals, such as the Legendary Bullgator, pose a potentially fatal threat.

The best way to take down the Legendary Bullgator is with explosive rifle rounds. His hide is extremely tough, so you will need a lot of ammo. You can find him in the swamplands south of Lagras. After you take it down, you'll be able to craft several items from its skin. These including Fowlers, a vest, a gambler's hat, and a talisman created from his tooth. Be very careful, though, since the legendary creature can sneak up on you and take you down fast.

Isn't worth it: The St. Denis Massive Street Fight

You have plenty of chances to punch various characters in Red Dead Redemption 2, but it's not often that other characters gang up against you.

If you travel to St. Denis and hang out on the southern end of town, near the docks and the water tower, you will soon find yourself in some trouble. One man will begin to pick on you, and before you know it, you'll be attached by three or four other men, and then they'll just keep coming. However, there's not much to gain in this massive street brawl other than practice. This part of St. Denis should be considered highly hostile, so if you're not looking for a fight, be careful.

Need to find: Big Circus Lion

Red Dead Redemption 2 does a good job surprising its players. There is one side mission that involves wrangling an escaped lion back to the circus. However, this is no easy feat. The lion is faster, sneakier, and more agile than you. Right when you think you have it trapped in a barn, it might escape and fatally maul someone nearby.

You'll also have a chance to track an escaped zebra and an escaped tiger as part of the "He's British, of Course" mission. Walk carefully, though, and make sure you have a big gun. Once eliminated, you can obtain the lion's paw trophy, and completing the entire mission gives you a gem that is worth $250.

Isn't worth it: Bear

While wandering through the woods south of Little Creek River and near the Western edge of the map, you can come across a cabin that appears to be abandoned with no lock on the front door. However, as soon as you open the door, a fierce bear will pop out.

That's right, the developers decided to have a little fun with and hide a bear inside a cabin for some unknown reason. In order to win the fight, you'll have to draw your weapon quickly. In fact, a lot of players have perished immediately after the encounter. However, nothing to be gained here except being surprised.

Need to find: Brathwaite Mansion Aftermath

This one is actually a little tricky, as it technically involves the aftermath of a boss fight that occurs in Chapter 3. Before this, you must encounter two plantation families in the game. One of these families is Braithwaites, with whom you have a pretty big fight. The mansion is heavily guarded, though, so it's an epic battle.

After the events of Chapter 3, it's worth going back to the mansion, despite the fact that you've already defeated the bosses. You will notice that the mansion is burned down, and you'll find the remains of Catherine Braithwaite, who didn't make it out alive. Near her, under the floorboards, is a lockbox with a golden bar. You can sell the golden bar for $500, which is a fair amount of money in the game.

Need to find: Legendary White Bison

As with all the Legendary animals, you must hunt and track each creature very carefully. You cannot damage their pelts, so you have to leave the bow and arrow behind and instead focus on using powerful firearms to shoot them in the head. Once you have them tracked and you've shot them down, you can skin them for their pelts and craft certain items from the remains.

One of the rewards for the White Bison is the Bison Horn Talisman, which can be used to slow down the drain on your stamina. The pelts can also be sold for a hefty amount. You can find the White Bison near the north shore of Lake Isabella. If it eludes you, make sure to nap in another region for 72 hours before trying again.
