By this point in time, news of Rockstar following up their 2010 hit Red Dead Redemption with a sequel has somewhat become the stuff of legend. Like the fabled gunslinger from days past, stories of Red Dead Redemption 2 surface amongst the public every now and then, filling gamers with intrigue and excitement, only to ultimately end up as little more than a well-told tale.

It is not, however, as though a Red Dead Redemption sequel hasn’t been in the works for years or that the game doesn’t exist. Back in 2012, Rockstar revealed that they were “excited for more epic Western action” and made it clear that they intended to eventually bring the title back to its dedicated fanbase of gamers. When exactly this will happen has become an ongoing frustration for many.

Though the last news we heard of the sequel was back in March when the rumored Red Dead Redemption 2: Legends of the West was expected to turn up at this past June’s E3 expo in Los Angeles, that event came and went without any sign of the game. The latest rumor now comes to us courtesy of Game Debate, who say that publisher Take-Two Interactive will be at this August’s Gamescom trade fair in Cologne, Germany revealing numerous upcoming titles – one of which could quite possibly be Red Dead Redemption 2.

Take-Two Interactive owns Rockstar Games and as such has been involved with the release of some of Rockstar’s biggest titles including the Grand Theft Auto series, the Max Payne series and of course, the Red Dead Redemption series. The stories that have persisted regarding the next installment in the popular Western franchise have been wonderfully enticing, with rumors of an open world map the size of the entire continental United States, the ability to control a variety of characters and a storyline that features John Marsten’s son as the protagonist. Of course, all of these concepts are best taken with a grain of salt, as Rockstar hasn’t confirmed them in any way, shape, or form. What Rockstar has confirmed as of 2 months ago, however, is that they are nearing the reveal of their latest title – which is perhaps more reason to believe that this will occur at Gamescom.

Red Dead Gun Fight

By all accounts, Gamescom really should be the place to let the world see Red Dead 2. Gamers undoubtedly feel as though they’ve been waiting forever for the title and many have grown understandably irritated with the constant lack of concrete information on the game’s progress. As frustrating as this can be, it’s best to remember that Rockstar isn’t out to cause gamers grief – they’re simply taking the time necessary to create the best possible end product, the sort that fans of Red Dead and Rockstar in general have come to appreciate and expect.

For now, there’s always the backwards compatibility of the original Red Dead to keep the die-hard fans busy while they await the next installment. What’s more, when Red Dead 2 does finally arrive it’s likely going to be a game changer in terms of graphics, playability and overall entertainment value. Given its track record, it’s hard to expect anything less from Rockstar.

Screen Rant will keep you up to date with the latest Red Dead Redemption 2 news. Gamescom runs from August 17-21st, 2016.
