The evolution of open-world gaming has continued to grow over the years by leaps and bounds. Though opinions and preferences will always vary on this issue, developer Rockstar Games has arguably revolutionized what open world gaming means and become somewhat synonymous with the genre in the process.
With a host of successful titles to their credit, Rockstar is still dealing with acclaim from the release of 2013's Grand Theft Auto V, as well as the re-release of that title for next-gen consoles in 2014 and for PC in 2015. Amidst all this praise however, fans of Rockstar’s 2010 open world Western hit Red Dead Redemption have been waiting and waiting – and waiting for any sign or news of a sequel (and of the first coming to PC).
The most recent word on the followup is nothing more than a rumor at this point, but it’s also quite possibly the best lead that fans have been offered thus far. The news came from an email sent to video game website Fraghero, via a source who wishes to remain anonymous. The email claims that the sequel has been in development for four years and will be titled Red Dead Redemption 2: Legends of the West.
The mysterious email went on to state that Red Dead 2 will be released in the fall of 2017 and will officially be announced by Rockstar at this upcoming June’s E3 trade fair. Apparently, the sequel will offer the option for gamers to play more than one character in a much larger environment than previously seen in the original title. The source also claims that this information was obtained from an ex-Rockstar employee and that an HD re-release of the original Red Dead Redemption is planned for release by the end of this year on next-gen consoles.
If all of this sounds a little familiar, it’s because it is. Last year, rumors persisted that Red Dead 2 would be announced at E3 and when that failed to materialize, word spread that the highly anticipated sequel would be announced at Europe's Gamescom event – which also didn’t happen. As far as that ex-Rockstar employee goes, last year a Reddit member who went by the handle ‘AnonDN1978’ and claimed to be an ex-Rockstar employee revealed much of what Fraghero is currently reporting plus a more detailed breakdown of the game’s plot, characters and customization options. That source however, did not state a specific release date.
Those who are eager for a sequel to arrive can rest easy in the knowledge that Rockstar are in fact, developing one. When exactly this game will arrive is unknown but if these recent rumors do turn out to be true, Red Dead Redemption fans are undoubtedly in for the sort of next-gen treat that only Rockstar can provide.
Screen Rant will keep you up to date on Red Dead Redemption 2 as more information is revealed.
