Rockstar has been on a roll over the last decade with the absurd success of Grand Theft Auto 5, and the massive release of Red Dead Redemption 2. Both games were an immediate hit with both fans and critics alike.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is already a massive experience, and since its launch, Rockstar has added Red Dead Online and continued to support it. While it isn't at the same level as GTA Online, Red Dead Online has a dedicated fanbase.

One way the Red Dead Redemption 2 differs from its predecessor, however, is a lack of single-player DLC. The first game saw a massive expansion with Undead Nightmare, but Rockstar hasn't released any single-player content and made it clear that they don't have any intention to do so.

GTA Online Changed Rockstar's Plans

GTA V Online

The short answer for why Red Dead Redemption 2 didn't get single-player DLC lies completely with GTA Online. At some point, Rockstar had single-player DLC plans for Grand Theft Auto 5, but GTA Online was a huge success much bigger than Rockstar expected. This led to Rockstar focusing wholeheartedly on GTA Online, providing new content and changes for years. Rockstar adopted the same approach with Red Dead Redemption 2, opting to focus on expanding Red Dead Online instead of creating single-player content.

Simply put, GTA Online is a massive money-maker, even boosting revenue for Take-Two in 2019, years after its launch. On top of this Red Dead Redemption 2 was in development for seven years and likely had a huge cost for Rockstar. Supporting Red Dead Online is a much better way to make back that cost than spending, even more, dev time on a one-time single-player DLC.

In September 2019 Rockstar officially announced that they didn't have any plans for single-player DLC, and were focusing completely on Red Dead Online. Consider how things with GTA Online went, it's unlikely that those plans will change anytime soon.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
