Despite the fact that it's now well more than a decade old (not counting A Year In The Life, obviously), it's actually impressive how well the WB classic series Gilmore Girls holds up today. It's unique charm still hasn't been replicated by any other series, and although there are a few flaws, it's still as funny and enchanting today as it was when it first aired.

However, what would Gilmore Girls be like if the show had started today instead of in the year 2000? More specifically, what contemporary actors are the best fit for the variety of quirky characters in the series?

Dean Forester - KJ Apa

Archie raising his eyebrows in surprise

Sure, he's currently occupied playing Archie Andrews on The CW's Riverdale, but that is a perfect example of why KJ Apa is such a great choice for a character like Dean Forester.

He both needs to appear like the absolute picture of a standup guy who happens to be extremely good looking, but he also needs to be able to portray the slight edge that Dean needs once he gets a little tougher and more morally ambiguous.

Logan Huntzberger - Ansel Elgort

It's really hard to say what it means to look like you're a rich kid, but whatever that vibe is, both Logan Huntzberger and Ansel Elgort have it in spades.

Logan needs to be both charming and infuriating, and it seems like Ansel would have an easy time playing two sides of that coin as well.

Jess Mariano - Dacre Montgomery

Given that Australian actor Dacre Montgomery has made his name as the always terrifying, sometimes crazy, intermittently sympathetic, and occasionally lovable bad boy Billy Hargrove on Stranger Things, it seems like playing a role like Jess Mariano would be pretty easy.

Jess is a jerk with a heart of gold, which can be difficult to portray, but it seems like Montgomery would be up for the task.

Sookie St. James - Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling

In the hands of the wrong actress, a character like Sookie St. James could come off as incredibly annoying instead of irresistibly charming, which is why Gilmore Girls had a brilliant stroke of luck when they found an as-yet undiscovered Melissa McCarthy for the role.

But someone like Mindy Kaling could expertly play Sookie as well, she has a lot of experience making normally irritating behaviors come off as funny or endearing.

Lane Kim - Lana Condor

Although the friendship between Lorelai and Rory Gilmore is truly at the heart of Gilmore Girls, it's undeniable that the long running and very sweet friendship between Rory and Lane Kim is a huge element of the series as well.

And an actress like To All The Boys I've Loved Before's Lana Condor seems like the perfect choice to bring this quirky music freak to life in a contemporary version of Gilmore Girls.

Luke Danes - Chris Pratt

Chris Pratt in Jurassic World

Despite the fact that Chris Pratt (and many of the other actors on this list, honestly) might be a little beyond television work at this point, it's hard to ignore that he'd be an absolutely perfect updated version of Luke Danes.

He has the humor to pull it off, he has a biting sarcasm that can easily match Lorelai's, and he has that kind of "average Joe" relatability that a character like Luke really needs.

Richard Gilmore - John Lithgow

John Lithgow in The Crown

Richard Gilmore is an intimidating patriarch for the Gilmore family, but beneath that veneer of upper crust stiffness he's actually an incredibly kind and generous man.

Richard needs a very talented actor to play all of the multitudes of traits that he embodies as well as believably portraying the complicated relationship that Richard has with his daughter and granddaughter, but John Lithgow pretty clearly looks and could play the part.

Emily Gilmore - Jamie Lee Curtis

Although Lorelai Gilmore is clearly the heart of the humor in Gilmore Girls, it's not hard to understand where Lorelai gets her snappy wit from. Emily Gilmore is typically very refined and restrained, but she also has a biting cleverness to her that is hard to replicate.

However, an actress like Jamie Lee Curtis clearly possesses both the elegance of Emily as well as the ferocity, intelligence, and wittiness.

Rory Gilmore - Hailee Steinfeld

The Edge Of Seventeen Hailee Steinfeld

Rory Gilmore is a unique character in the sense that on paper she is the picture perfect goody two shoes, but she has also inherited a lot of her mother's quirks and unique taste.

One actress who seems to look the part and seems more than capable of playing both sides of that duality is Hailee Steinfeld, and she might even give a little more edge to Rory that the original Rory was always missing.

Lorelai Gilmore - Rachel Bloom

Rachel Bloom in My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - Rising TV Stars Fall 2015

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend never got the level of attention that it truly deserved, but Rachel Bloom, the multi-talented creator and star of the series, would be amazing in a role like Lorelai Gilmore.

Lorelai is a character that is extra in every way, and her constant bantering and extreme behavior can easily go wrong in the wrong actor's hands. However as the star of a musical comedy, Bloom clearly knows how to balance extremeness and make it enchanting instead of insufferable.
