What happened to Rubeus Hagrid after the events of Harry Potter? Actor Robbie Coltrane played the gentle half-giant in all eight movies of the franchise based on the books by author J.K. Rowling. According to Rowling, Hagrid didn't change much in the years following the series' end.
Rubeus Hagrid, who went solely by his last name for an unknown reason, was described as a half-giant wizard. He attended Hogwarts in the 1940s where he was sorted into Gryffindor. Hagrid was framed by Tom Riddle for opening the Chamber of Secrets and allowing his pet Acromantula to attack Muggle-born students, events that led to his expulsion. Albus Dumbledore later allowed Hagrid to live on the Hogwarts grounds and act as the gamekeeper.
Hagrid was the first person to introduce Harry Potter into the wizarding world. The pair had a very special friendship throughout Harry's time at Hogwarts. In fact, Hagrid got along well with most of his fellow witches and wizards. He would, at times, lose confidence when teaching, which resulted in some criticism, particularly from Slytherins. Despite that, Hagrid was viewed as a kind-hearted and easy-going. Toward the end of the Harry Potter series, Hagrid bravely fought against Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters in the Battle of Hogwarts. Rowling has provided clues into Hagrid's later life after the Second Wizarding War.
The epilogue at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows briefly mentioned Hagrid's name. When Harry and Ginny were dropping off their son Albus at King's Cross Station, Harry reminded Albus about Hagrid's invitation for tea in his hut. The year was revealed to be 2017, making Hagrid 89 years old at the time which was not unheard of for wizards. The invitation indicated that Hagrid was still living and working at Hogwarts during Albus' first year.
In 2007, Rowling spoke to Harry Potter fans during an event at New York City's Carnegie Hall. A member of the audience asked whether Hagrid ever got married or had children in which Rowling responded "no." She explained that most of the giants in the Harry Potter universe had killed each other off so there weren't many options left for Hagrid. He notably had a romantic relationship with Madame Olympe Maxime but Rowling figured she was too sophisticated for him, so the relationship never led to anything serious.
Hagrid did appear in two scenes in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but they were strictly flashbacks. The play didn't specify what happened to Hagrid after Albus' first year, which has had Harry Potter fans wonder about the beloved character's fate. It seems likely that Hagrid lived out his life doing what he loved the most: caring for his array of magical creatures.
