The first Rebel Moon footage arrives and showcases Zack Snyder's epic sci-fi war movie. The popular director made the move to Netflix several years ago and began a fruitful relationship between the pair that allowed Snyder to get one of his dream projects off the ground. Rebel Moon is a new sci-fi franchise based on an idea that Snyder originally had for a Seven Samurai-style Star Wars movie that Lucasfilm did not want to make. He reworked the concept to create a new world and brought Sofia Boutella aboard to play the lead, a young woman who leads a rebellion against an oppressive intergalactic force.

As part of a Netflix 2023 movie trailer, the streamer has now released the first Rebel Moon trailer in a sense by sharing the first footage from the upcoming Netflix film.

The Rebel Moon footage provides new looks at cast members Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, and Djimon Hounsou, but it also highlights the film's massive sci-fi action under Snyder's direction. Netflix officially confirmed that Rebel Moon's release date is December 22, 2023, in addition to sharing the footage.

Everything We Know About Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon

The Rebel Moon footage might be light on details about the actual movie, there is still plenty of information that has been revealed about Zack Snyder's sci-fi epic. The movie revolves around Sofia Boutella's character Kora, a young woman who becomes a central figure in taking down an evil intergalactic leader. As Rebel Moon was originally intended to be a Star Wars movie, what was originally likely meant to be a form of the Empire has been replaced by a tyrannical army under the leadership of Balisarius, played by Ed Skrein. Djimon Hounsou's character leads the army.

The rest of Rebel Moon's cast also includes Anthony Hopkins, Corey Stoll, Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Cary Elwes, and more. Anthony Hopkins is providing the voice for a robot who protected the former King. Zack Snyder started filming the movie in April 2022 and did not wrap production until December. The reason for the long shoot is not connected to troubles during production but rather a sign of Netflix and Snyder's plans for Rebel Moon expanding. The movie's new December 2023 release date confirms Netflix has big plans for Snyder's sci-fi franchise.

Rebel Moon Is The Start Of Zack Snyder's Next Netflix Franchise

Zack Snyder on set of Army of the Dead

Zack Snyder always envisioned Rebel Moon as the start of a new franchise, and Netflix has made it possible for that vision to be fulfilled from the start. After Snyder delivered a successful franchise starter to Netflix in Army of the Dead, plans for Rebel Moon expanded to allow two films to be shot back-to-back. So far, Netflix is not marketing Rebel Moon as part one of a two-part story, but it is confirmed that Snyder already has the sequel's production completed now. If Rebel Moon is as big of a hit as Netflix and Zack Snyder want, the franchise could expand well beyond the current two-movie plan.
