Rebel Moon set video reveals a massive practical space ship built for Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic. Having already tackled zombies, superheroes and Ancient Sparta, Snyder will next set his sights on space opera. A Netflix co-production, Rebel Moon concerns a plucky band of resistance fighters defending a distant space colony against an evil tyrant and his powerful army.

It’s surely no surprise that the premise of Rebel Moon immediately calls Star Wars to mind, as Snyder originally pitched it to Lucasfilm as a potential Star Wars movie. Now Snyder will re-purpose the idea to launch his own sci-fi franchise, having already announced that Rebel Moon 2 will be shot back-to-back with the first film. The first Rebel Moon sees Snyder reuniting with several actors from the DCEU, including Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou and Jena Malone. The cast also includes Anthony Hopkins in a voice role as the robot Jimmy, along with Charlie Hunnam, Ed Skrein, Doona Bae, Sofia Boutella, Cary Elwes and more.

Snyder himself has already whetted fans’ appetites for Rebel Moon with a few teasing images, including a look at Hounsou as General Titus as well as a makeup test for a weird alien creature. Now unofficial set video has emerged thanks to L.A. photojournalist John Schreiber, who tweeted some aerial footage he grabbed of a big space ship set built for Snyder’s space epic. See the clip in the space below:

Fans who wish to get a closer look at this impressive practical space ship are in luck, as Snyder recently announced a contest to win a trip to visit the Rebel Moon set. Obviously the sets of movies are normally shrouded in secrecy to avoid spoilers getting out. But there’s great benefit for Snyder in actually giving people access to his Rebel Moon set, as he tries to build buzz for a movie that doesn’t have the advantage of being established IP.

Of course there is a certain upside in working from a completely original piece of material, as one is not beholden to fan expectations. On the other hand, trying to start a new franchise from scratch can be very daunting, as it’s hard to gain a foothold in a marketplace dominated by established brands with rabid fanbases. But Snyder may have the best of both worlds with Rebel Moon, a movie that may be his own original idea, but that sounds enough echoes of Star Wars to give people some idea of what they can expect. It remains to be seen of course if audiences embrace Rebel Moon when it hits Netflix. But the above set video does provide a compelling tease of what the movie has to offer, as Snyder embarks upon his own saga set during a war among the stars.
