Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon cast now includes actors Rupert Friend and Stuart Martin. Rebel Moon will be joining Netflix as one of its biggest sci-fi productions to date. This latest project in Snyder's list of blockbuster creations is set on distant alien worlds. The director has suggested it will pay homage to several other films, including Star Wars and director Akira Kurosawa's work. With Warner Bros. and Snyder slowly parting ways, this marks Netflix's attempts to pull in talent by handing over more creative control on project choices.
Netflix Geeked has confirmed that Rupert Friend (Hitman, Anatomy of a Scandal) will be joining the Rebel Moon cast as one of the lead antagonists, and that Stuart Martin (Army of Thieves) will also be coming on board. From the few details known about the plot, Friend is likely playing Balisarius, an interplanetary warlord who has shown up on a small planet's doorstep. Friend and Martin join an already-confirmed list of actor in the Rebel Moon cast: Sofia Boutella (The Mummy), Ray Fisher (Justice League), Charlie Hunnam (The Gentlemen), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam) and Doona Bae (Cloud Atlas).
Boutella's character will have the lead role in Rebel Moon, as she begins assembling a team to resist Balisarius. Snyder, Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten and 300 co-screenwriter Kurt Johnstad are collectively writing the script and building out the new fictional world. Over 10 years in the making, the writing Rebel Moon team is riffing on an old pitch Snyder had for a Star Wars movie. Using similar themes and settings of the famous franchise without being tied to a legacy of previous work, Snyder's Rebel Moon has the potential to be a fresh new take in the space opera genre as filming begins in April.
