Disney+ is continuing to find ways to compete with the other streaming services. While it has an amazing vault of old content, including classic films and series from the likes of FOX, Pixar, Disney Channel, National Geographic, Marvel and more, it is struggling to create original programming.

One option in order to continue to create great content, is to set up films across the world that reflect the region that their production is held in. This way, each version of Disney+ could have localized content available in the different regions. There's a number of reasons why this is a good plan to follow for Disney and a number of reasons why they should perhaps avoid this route.

Should: New Studios

There's also an opportunity to set up a lot of new studios around the globe to help out with this. That would mean Disney+ was getting talent from all of the continents and so many different brands.

That means some great news for fans, who will be getting the best production talent in the world. Plus it's really healthy for the global film industry as well.

Shouldn't: Regional Divides

The problem with creating content for specific areas in the globe is that it can also create regional divides. So far there's already a bit of delay in when the US and Canada get content compared to Europe.

If there is regional content as well, it may only be available in certain areas. This is likely to divide everything further and viewers may become upset about what is and isn't available to them.

Should: Personalized Content

It's so useful to get personalized content for different areas across the globe. It feels like such a big company is understanding the intricacies of local culture.

For such a big brand this goes a long way in continuing to get public support for their product. If successful, more people can find content personalized towards them and their background.

Shouldn't: Gimmicky

There's a risk that if not done properly, the idea could come off as a little gimmicky. The aim is to be a true reflection of the various regions of distribution, not just to garner more viewers.

In many ways Pixar's short films are a great way to see how content can be personalised and even reflect various regions while also being a piece of art!

Should: Reflect Real Communities

By creating localized content, people can see their own lives and culture reflected back at them. This is so great in terms of diversity and representation.

An American film crew might not be able to produce a story that properly reflects something in Japan. Whether it's in the form of documentaries or fictional content, it needs to be made by the people who live there.

Shouldn't: Complex

It's quite a complex idea to put across to people, who may be confused why their Disney+ has different shows compared to other places. It's easy to explain when Netflix doesn't have the rights to certain regions.

But when Disney would own all the content, it would probably be hard to explain why they are creating shows for only certain versions of Disney+.

Should: Original Content

Disney+ is in dire need of more original programming. It's already falling behind in terms of originals, partially because production had to be halted on a number of different projects.

While the shows on the platform are certainly re-watchable and the films are classics, this isn't enough. The benefit of Disney+ is that they can create a lot of 5 minute videos to produce series around.

Shouldn't: Too Close To Launch

It's pretty close to the launch of the app and subscription service still. It's barely been a year in some areas of the world. Perhaps it's too soon to roll out such an initiative.

It might be that this is an idea for down the line, when Disney+ needs to be freshened up a little bit. At some stage is could be a great way to boost it, once past this initial phase.

Should: New Voices

It's so vital to get brand new creative voices out there. By opening up Disney+ internationally, it may lead to stories that no one would have expected. Every regional aspect can play a factor.

Whether it's to do with the sports in the area, perhaps the food, the natural beauty of the people themselves, there's a lot of new voices that want to talk about these things that they love.

Shouldn't: Copying Other Platforms

Netflix already has a way to appeal to local areas, with their platform making sure to have content specifically for each region. They have even started to create shows in different languages for different areas.

Disney could be copying that model and therefore treading on Netflix territory if they were to follow this method. If they are to try to compete in this manner then their content simply has to be better.
