Mary Cosby of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City has come under fire lately for certain problematic remarks she’s made on the show and fans are appalled that this is happening yet again. Last season, Mary made a comment that she doesn’t enter a convenience store if men of color are standing outside. This season, she shocked fans when she compared Jen Shah to a Mexican drug cartel. On social media, Mary issued an apology in a now-deleted Instagram post, but the message got lost due to the flowery font and poem-like structure. Fans questioned the sincerity of her apology and didn’t think she understood why her comparison was insensitive.
In a recent episode of RHOSLC, Jennie Nguyen threw a pho luncheon for the housewives to share her culture and come together for a day of peace. When Mary arrived, the ladies complimented her on her blonde wig. Lisa Barlow showed Mary a picture of Jennie wearing a blonde wig during their ladies’ night together with Meredith Marks. Mary said that Jennie looked good with blonde hair due to the “yellow tone” in her skin and then complimented her on her “slanted eyes.” Jennie was extremely offended at Mary’s ignorant statements but didn’t want to ruin her lunch by confronting her.
Fans were yet again shocked when in the following episode when Mary made fun of Jennie’s accent over lunch with Meredith. Viewers were disappointed when Meredith merely cringed and laughed it off. Meredith addressed it on Twitter, “It is not ok to imitate someone’s accent.” When Meredith got backlash from fans asking why she didn’t stand up to Mary, Meredith tweeted, “I later talked to Mary one on one in hopes that would be productive. I also made sure Jennie knew that she has my support. Please be patient.” A fan replied, “What the hell is wrong with Mary? Tone deaf?” to which Mary shot back, “What’s wrong with you? Go jump! I don’t care what you think? I don’t know you and don’t want too! You would not understand me anyway…” Fans were outraged that Mary would suggest someone hurt themselves based on a comment on social media and many are questioning Mary’s ability to lead a church.
At Whitney Rose's Wild Rose launch party, Jennie gathered some of the women to talk about Mary’s comments about her Asian features. When Jennie tried to explain why those comments were racist and discriminatory, Mary just smirked and rolled her eyes. Mary eventually apologized, but fans are not buying it due to her reaction to viewers’ tweets. Lisa brought up Mary’s “Mexican” comment about Jen. However, Mary adamantly denied saying that. Fans are confused as to whether Mary forgets the offensive things she says or if she’s merely lying to save face.
Many viewers are demanding that Mary be fired from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Fans compare her to Leanne Locken, who was fired from The Real Housewives of Dallas after making racially inappropriate comments about Kary Brittingham being Mexican. Mary has taken almost no accountability for the insensitive things she has said. Viewers think that the cast is letting her off lightly. So far, it seems like Jennie has been the only one to really address it. Fans are hoping that Mary’s racist comments will be addressed at the reunion and that she will take responsibility for her actions.
